Hajj -- At What Age?

If you have had the privilege of completing this requirement, congratulations. You are truly blessed by Allah.

At what age did you complete it?

At what age do you think a child should be taken for the pilgrimage?

How young is too young?

Re: Hajj -- At What Age?

18 is best age.

Re: Hajj -- At What Age?

Alhumdulillah I was really privileged to have gone for umrah when I was 9 during Ramadan, then for Hajj when I was 12, then for umrah when I was 17 and then again for Hajj when I was 24, (my own money last visit).

In those times I've seen families there with infants as young as a few weeks old to people who are as old as 90 plus ... Hajj becomes obligatory on us when we are:

A) Physically adult
B) Affording of it with our own money

In which case there could be times when it will not be obligatory throughout the life of a person ... If parents wish to take their children, then they do so if there no other options to leave them behind ... And if indeed they are prepared to handle them while there. I would say in the unique case when parents are due to undertake their fard Hajj, and their kids are old enough to pray and keep clean, if money is not issue and no one at home is around to take are of them then in that situation the kids could be as old as 7 or 8 ... If you want them to remember details that they could make use of when growing older to do their own fard Hajj, then 11 or 12 would be youngest age. Otherwise umrah is always an option. If money is hard to come by then leave the kids with someone and don't let the children be a cause of preventing yourselves from doing Hajj.

Re: Hajj -- At What Age?

Hajj is the one religious obligation i'm looking forward to performing...i kinda postponed it involuntarily thinking that i'll take my wife with me whenever i get married...the first trip together! so far, just a dream and i intend to fulfill my religious obligation next year iA with or without my wife...i wish with my wife though! so, du'aa kijiye sab log mere Haq meN...shukria.

Re: Hajj -- At What Age?

You know Muzna, I think that ideally, if we can afford it, then we should all do Hajj twice in our life. Once as soon as we become baaligh, and once towards the older age (after retirement and baal bachchon kee shadi). Former would take care of our obligation when we have enrgy, and latter would help us getting our sins forgiven by Allah SWT that we collected all our lives.

I want to take my kids for Hajj as soon as the younger one turned 15-16, before they get married, so later if their hubbies cant take them first (because he needs to take his parent) then at least my duaghter obligation would not be his responsibility and he can do it in peace.

Re: Hajj – At What Age?

I think there is an important note that the story differs somewhat with female dependants from male ones … I think TLK has taken the noble option for his daughters rather than lumping it on his future damads to sort out … But of course if circumstances dictate that to be the case then a wife is indeed the responsibility of her husband, but before she is married the responsibility of the girl is with her father … Then it is best to do so when she has reached the age of intellect and bordering wisdom … 15 to 18 would be a good age.

I do wonder however, that if a young man was in himself not able to afford the price to go, but his father was able to pay for him, his father having already been to Hajj, would it be obligatory on his son to go on Hajj on his father’s income? I would guess, no … :hmmm: … Gotta find out!
