Hair, wigs, and a question (for gals)

With a title such as this, it’s bound to be a weird question:~)

There’s a local children’s hospital somewhat close to where i live. Alongwith particular chosen hair salons, the hospital has set up a special ‘program’ for children under the age of 18 who have lost their hair due to chemotherapy, burns, or other medical conditions.

Although technically they do not restrict themselves to one gender, manifestly it is mostly girls who request help in this program; girls who have lost their hair - can be through anything, severe burns caused in an accident, or the effects of chemotherapy or another medical condition. In cases where their hair will not naturally grow back, someone else can donate their hair to be used to make a wig for these children. (Yes, artificial wigs are possible, but some prefer real hair). i was at a hair salon a few weeks back, my brother was getting a trim, and one of the stylists there asked me whether i would be interested in this program. i didn’t go for it at the time, although we discussed it and i picked up a pamplet and checked with the hospital. Problem is - i can’t really think of any reasons not to, but i was wondering whether any of the girls here has heard of this, or whether they have done it themselves.

…i THINK i saw an organization similar to this profiled on Oprah a year or two ago, but that was probably in the States, possibly Chicago. i am unable to see any disadvantages in this - you get to help out these little kids who may be going through chemotherapy, or who were in an accident and got severely burned. Would (or have) any of the girls here heard about this program, would you be involved in it, why/why not?

(Would appreciate serious answers only please).

My friend cut off 12 inches and donated it. I thought it was very sweet. My dad won't let me cut my hair. If in the future I one day do cut it, then I'm definitely donating i to charity. I think its a nice cause and its important for girls to feel nice things at such a horrible time. :)

hmmm, interesting.....

my sister went thru chemo and had all the related effects including hairloss. It is a distressing position to be in, and she took the route of wigs. Alhumdulillah she went through the treatment successfully and is on her way to recovery, but just having that option at that time was very helpful. Helped her continue her life in as normal as possible manner under those circumstances.

If you look at theat and from a kid's perspective, the importance and need may grow more.

not as critical as blood or plasma donation by any means from a physical need perspective but i say its up there from a psychological need perspective.

Hope this helped.

sorry, i know its for ladies, but i wanted to present something from my sisters perspective who went though this.

Nadia, you brought a very good topic..

can i ask few questions..please. What is the program called? Is there any specific length of hairs that one donates? can you send them hairs from different part of the cities or world as a parcel?

I wish i could know about it before..i chopped about 2.5 feet of my hairs a year back or so..and they were thrown into garbage..if i had known about it..to kisi kay kaam hi aa jatay.

In any case do let me know more details coz i know so many girls and aunties..and most of them go for regular cuts..and i am sure they won't mind participating in such programs..including myself :)

Another thing that came to mind is the program for ladies with cancers..called feelgood lookgood or something. In that program they do makeovers and according to research they have seen great improvements health wise in patients with that program.

I'm always chopping my hair off. If you could post some information on the organization and if 'donations' can be made....I think more people would be generous enough to give their hair as I would.

I can't think of any reason why you should not take part in this organization. It's for a good cause and I'm sure it'll make you feel good as well ... to be helping others out.
