Controversial Hair named for Pakistan-India series

KARACHI, Dec 24: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has nominated umpire Darrell Hair for final two Tests of the forthcoming Pakistan-India series despite the Australian’s indifferent performance in the recent series against England.

Hair was embroiled in controversy when he erroneously referred a run-out appeal against Inzamamul Haq during last month’s second Test in Faisalabad.

Inzamam was given out by local umpire Nadeem Ghauri after the Pakistan captain had failed to reach the crease while taking an evasive action when England fast bowler Steve Harmison threw the ball on his follow through.

According the laws of cricket, the field umpires (Hair and Simon Taufel) should have declared Inzamam not out instead of referring the matter to the TV umpire who clearly lacked a common cricketing sense at that point of time.

Hair also upset the Pakistanis when he warned both opener Salman Butt and leg-spinner Danish Kaneria for running on the pitch. The Australian official earned notoriety when he called Sri Lankan off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan for throwing during the Melbourne Test in 1995-96.

South African Rudi Koertzen is scheduled to stand in the first two Tests. His partner from the ICC elite panel in the first Test at Lahore will be Australia’s Daryl Harper.

Hair and Koertzen will take charge of the second Test in Faisalabad while Hair then teams up with fellow Australian Taufel for the third and final Test in Karachi.

Taufel, currently the highest rated umpire, is due to supervise in all five One-day Internationals between the great Asian rivals with field umpires to be nominated by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Ranjan Madugalle, the former Sri Lanka captain and the ICC’s chief referee, will oversee the Test series while ex-England opening batsman Chris Broad is the ICC match referee for the ODI series.

That's ok coz hair dislikes both India and Pakistan equally, so he'll be fair.:D everyone knows Bucknor is anti-india so good that he won't be there. Harper also has a history of bad decisions against india,though i don't know how he treated pakistan.

Anybody but Bucknor, Or India would have played with 10. Since Buknor just raises finger against Tendulkar on any appeal........ :-)

If it was my wish I would have gotten Tufnel & Nadeem ( Yes, he is Pakistani and cannot officiate. But he is mighty good)

nadeem ghauri sucks, he is a one of those wanna be umpires trying to look like an englisman in his umpiring style n e wayz he sucks as an ump! aleem dar is the man, aleem dar and bucknor would have been good, or since indians will cry, then dar and taufel but thats impossiblke as we know!

Rules should change for this series. There should one umpire from Pakistan and one from India.

Aleem Dar and Taufel umpiring in one game that would be amazing.. but impossible yes.

I am not worried about that D. Hair @#$%^& umpire at all now, coz the M. Referee is C. Broad and this guy is one of the extremist $$$#^ I wont be surprised at all if couple of Pakistani players are handed dissent and ban of couple of Matches.

Well we only have our board to blame, after all we wouldn't want to disturb the good will! India's strong stand against Bucknor has paid them dividends, and he has conveniently disappeared from Indian fixtures. Hair has been far more controversial than Bucknor, but he is against a much weaker and inept opposition.

While the Pakistan team has been performing very well ON the field, our OFF the field activities still leave a lot to be desired. Poor lobbying and mismanagement has resulted in the following failures:

  1. Players constantly getting banned and unbanned with regards to bowling actions as compared to how smoothly Harbhajan and Murali were resolved.

  2. Getting pushed around by other countries in deciding match venues, we must be the only board that gets dictated by the TOURING party.

  3. Unable to lodge any kind of stand or complaint regarding the consistent poor umpiring by Hair and Bowden. I don't include Koertzen although he is far from perfect simply because his wrong decisions go BOTH ways. With Hair and Bowden, it's all one way traffic. As a result, we are bound to suffer further.

  4. Got pushed out of hosting the Asia Cup just because India pulled out at the last minute with the ridiculous excuse of "busy schedule". That busy schedule was privy to them at the time the Asia Cup was scheduled.

  5. Most importantly, PCB has failed to give its players the necessity of playing Test Cricket. Pakistan will be playing a grand total of 13 Test in 2006. Bangladesh played 30 odd this year and Australia played close to 50.

  6. Instead of grooming more high quality local umpires like Aleem Dar, we have needlessly precedent the use of two neutral umpires on home tours. This way the standard of Pakistani umpiring will stay like those of Rauf and Ghauri.

PCB is not run by compatent qualified officials, who dont know how to run such a large institution! same goes for the guy who apppointed them, the army’s job is not to run the country, its to protect it! n e wayz all the points youve made are spot on! PCB is only fortunate the team is playing well!!

This is seriously a bad news. I can't understand why ICC still have him in the umpires panel. He doesn't have the quality to umpire the First class matches, let alone International. The decisions he gave in Pak-Eng series are a good proof of how blind, deaf, idiotic, and biased this guy is.
