Hair Salons

Do you go to a hair salon where you spend anything more than 20 dollars for a haircut? Do you get treatments?

Was talking to an Indian girl today. She said she gets keratin treatments and haircuts from Aveda, and it all costed about 80 bucks.

I was like WTH. Everyone present insisted that a good hair salon, even costly, is very much worth it.

Anyone have this experience? I still use hair cuttery and am pretty angry they now charge 15 dollars for what used to be an 11 dollar haircut.

Re: Hair Salons

er.. i’m a guy and don’t remember ever paying under $20 for a haircut in the past 10 years. 11 dollar haircut for women? you are in prison, arent you?

Re: Hair Salons

My haircut only is the equivalent of $100, so I don’t do salon treatments or colouring. Cheaper salons still charge about $60 so I don’t mind paying the extra for my hairdresser who has been cutting my hair for years and years now. The positives are that he doesn’t try to do anything crazy, listens to what I want and cuts my hair in a way that is right for my hair condition at the time. He also knows I’m low maintenance so doesn’t cut my hair in a way that I would have to straighten it or style it too much for it to look decent.

Re: Hair Salons

Unfortunately women do spend A LOT of cash on looking their best and getting their hair done at legit hair salons. Forget the $11 haircuts yaar, would be a good investment once in a while because a girls hairstyle can do wonders on her appearance and especially when your competition (other single women) are doing it regularly.

Re: Hair Salons

Nah, the last time I went to a salon, I was probably in high school and the lady screwed up my hair pretty bad. This was the second time and was at a completely different salon. After that I learnt how to cut my own hair and have been doing it ever since and absolutely love it. From my experience, it’s rare that any hairstylist has the knowledge of cutting curly hair.

Re: Hair Salons

Between $180 to $250 dollars (includes the 18 - 20% tip) for colour, highlights/lowlights, cut, blowdry.

Mind you, I only have the full hair treatment done twice a year (or even really every 8 to 9 months) but it’s totally worth it - you get what you pay for.

Re: Hair Salons

Depends on what you want to get done and the length of your hair. OP is just talking about a haircut so it won’t be as expensive…it can be up to around 20 some bucks or even under that in salons like Hair Cuttery, Regis, etc…add a blow dry to that and it’ll be a bit more. Of course, if you’re getting your hair partially or fully colored or permed or some other treatment…then yeah…it can reach up to a 100 bucks and even more. And the longer your hair…up goes the cost. So many variables here. Again, OP just asked about a haircut.

Re: Hair Salons

^ It depends on the salon. For just a haircut/style - the nicer salons in my city charge between $50 and it goes to about $80 depending on whether you see a “junior” versus “master” stylist.

A wash/blowout (think, no cutting services) costs $35 to $50, again depending on the seniority of the stylist.

Personally, it used to be the taxes (13% plus tip 18 - 20%) that killed me!

Re: Hair Salons

I pay $65 dollars (not including tip). I do not color or highlight my hair. This is just for a wash/cut/style. I am extremely particular about my hair and not everyone knows how to cut and style naturally curly hair like mine. I don’t straighten it either so it’s important to me to go to someone who knows what they are doing. I’ve been with my stylist for about 9 years now.

Re: Hair Salons

My hair is SUPER important to me…I don’t get treatments done very often but when I do…they have to be done right. Cost is not an issue.

Re: Hair Salons

pcg, you are SO real :). Yes I am kinda like this too, don’t spend too much on hair unless something special is going on. I have used all kind of salons (high end to low end) and I never really see the difference after you wash your hair. I don’t have a set hairstylist just go with the one that’s available or just point blank ask for the best one. I once went to a salon based on reviews (kinda expensive) and it wasn’t a good experience, vs went to my regular cheap one and it was perfectly fine.

Re: Hair Salons

I’ve been going to my hair lady at Visible Changes for almost 10 years (she has been working there for almost 26 years). I pay $60 (including tip) for the hair cut 2-3x/year. My hair is a few inches below my shoulders and I always get layers all over and short layers in the front the frame my face. I have NEVER had a bad experience with this woman. I work in a corporate environment where my hair needs to be “done”. I need consistency when it comes to the way I look. I don’t mind paying a higher price when I know that the outcome will be great. When I go for a hair cut, the only thing I tell her is how short I want the length to be. After that, she takes over. I don’t have to explain anything to her and I know that whatever she chooses to do, will end up looking great.

PCG, I’m curious…for $15, what does the salon do to your hair? Do you get layers or bangs? Do they wash/shampoo hair? From the time you sit down in the chair to get the hair cut, how long does the service actually last?

Re: Hair Salons

Last time I spent £35 for shampooing, conditioning treatment, hair cut and blow dry. I believe it depends on the hair length and good branded salons are costly.
I wonder if i can get hair cut done for only £15 may be at Asian salon.

Hair Salons

I love my hair! I get color and gloss and sometimes a trim, it costs from $150-$200.

Re: Hair Salons

I don’t remember ever paying anything below $35 for a wash, cut & blow dry (my memory goes as far back as high school). The average price I’ve paid over the years is close to $55. If I’m adding a hair gloss treatment, add another $25. Highlights are expensive and combined with a cut, will definitely cost above $100.

Aveda is one of my favourite go-to places for a haircut/treatment. As Sehrysh mentioned, the prices vary depending on how experienced the stylist is.
I don’t think you necessarily need to go to a very high end salon to get good results. But I wouldn’t trust a no-name barber shop with my hair either.

If you’re in the mood for experimenting, you can try those groupon deals that can end up saving you a lot of money (usually a 50-60% discount). For instance, a place where you would normally pay $150 for a cut & colour, with the groupon you might end up paying only $60 (+ tax and tip). Keep in mind though that these deals are usually with a junior stylist where the salon is trying to train new hires and using you as their guinea pig.

Re: Hair Salons

I’ve made relationships with my service providers…hair and aesthetics…so now I go to their “home salons” (which are set up exactly like the professional ones and not make-shift style in any way).

This saves me hundreds, literally…for the following reasons:

  • their prices are considerably lower because they have minimum overhead (no rental of space, no advertising etc, etc)
  • I don’t have to wait for their time/attention because they take me by appointment and that time is booked for me alone
  • cash payment so no tax!!!
  • tip amount drops to 10%-15% because they are not sharing with anyone

So where I used to pay upwards of $185 for shampoo, highlight/lowlight, cut and style, I’m now paying $100 with the tip.

Re: Hair Salons

15 dollars includes wash, and cut. It does not include blow dry - I never get that done. They just put some product in my hair, that way I get to try different products each time I go.

(This would be roughly 30 lbs for those reading from the UK, you have to convert the dollars to pounds).

I haven’t even heard of the word “gloss”.

Yeah, maybe I need to book and appointment and just do it.

And yes, VERY FEW hair cutters know how to deal with wavy/curly thick desi hair.

Re: Hair Salons

15 dollars would be like 9 pounds and change. :\

Re: Hair Salons

Lol you don’t even get a basic men’s cut for £9 any more. The days of male students going to ‘Mr Toppers’ on Tottenham Court Road for a £5 haircut are long gone.

Re: Hair Salons

I hope we know that lbs is a measure of weight :expressionless:
