Hair Extensions

Anyone ever got them?

i wandered into this new beauty supply shop that opened up in the area…towards the back there were wigs and hair extensions and ponytails…I felt this one piece OMG it was so soft and luscious…apparently its made of real human hair, it wasn’t more expensive htan teh other pieces there… (they were $8-25, this was $50-80 depending on the length)…I spoke to the woman who worked there, she was very helpful, told me how they’re applied (sewn or glued into real hair by a salon) and that they’ll last for two-three months… Now i’m starting to think abt it! I would really love to get extnesions and they’ll look natural too but I’m still not sure, how would my real hair come out? would the xtensions fall off or wht? :hmmm:

Re: Hair Extensions

They usually pre-tip each strand with a special kinda synthesized keratin protein type thing... its like a glue that bonds the strands into your hair... its done by heat.. or by melting...

Some salons use FastFusion technology that uses air pressure to get the job done quicker...

Theres many kinds... liquid bonding, thermal head, adn adhesive...
And lol no, they wont fall off...

Oh, and you have to be real careful when washing and brushing them....

Do you really need them? They can be a hassle.

Re: Hair Extensions

^ Do you know how much they would charge? She told me the median was abt $20 per strand/piece…I’m assuming there are abt 10-12 per head… is it a good investment or what.. :halo:

Re: Hair Extensions

Well since we’re talking human hair… I would say anywhere from 150-350 for a full head of hair… Havent ever gotten em, so I cant say… but it really depends on the length, where you go, etc…

I would assume places on Utica Ave. and Canarsie or Flatbush do it much cheaper than a dominantly white area obviously… but you’re in the Bronx right? :bummer: Dont really know about that…

Go to funkydo.com… theres alot of em there, and from what I heard, its one of the cheaper sites…

Re: Hair Extensions

^ The extensions I was looking at , was 10" long, and $50.... =// I was thinking of going to one of those black salons, because they're more into this stuff (weaves, extensions, etc)..

Re: Hair Extensions

$50 per strand?? I think thats expensive… plus they charge you per hour when you’re getting it done… and it takes like 4-5 hrs… it costs like $150 just to get them done, and an additional 80 or so when you have to get them removed…

I dont think you should get em, its a waste of money imo… you have nice hair as it is…I think :bummer:

Re: Hair Extensions

isn't it bad for the hair? Doesnt it start falling out in clumps and weigh your own hair down and causing it to fall out?

Re: Hair Extensions

No, not if you manage them properly... but in order to do that, you need to get them redone like approximately every 6 weeks..

Re: Hair Extensions

No, it was one piece that was abt 10" long, the stylist will cut them into separate strips/strands herself…I think ill find some salon in the area over hte weekend and talk to them about it…thing is I kinda hate talking to salon ppl because theyre just trying to sell me smoething and never tell me the downside.. I dunno, my hair is just very blah when its not straightened or blow dried and even when it is, its not that great…Maybe i should shave my head..if it works for babies it should work for me :bummer:

Re: Hair Extensions

:rotfl: try it out, the extensions thing… if its not too expensive.. give it a go!

Re: Hair Extensions

my sister had hair extentions, and they were from a really good salon so they were defo good quality but i dont think they looked v good. they got really knotty and you need to be real carefull when brushing and washing them etc. when my sister had them taken out, she noticed a big chunk of her hair was missing and had to wait ages for it grow back.

Re: Hair Extensions

I had extensions, both real and acrylic , around three years ago. The first time I had acrylic extensions put purely to add volume as due to some health complications I lost a lot of hair and needed something to just help me feel more confident I guess.

The second time I had real hair extensions put in…again mainly to add volume but also a little extra length.

Both times the procedure took around 6 hours (acrylic extensions were woven into the existing hair while the real hair extensions are glued in). i loved loved loved the look of the extensions, because I had them done at a very reputable place they were done ‘properly’ and you couldn’t even tell I had any extensions even close up.

The only reason I stopped having further extension was due to the cost (at least£400 every 10 weeks ) and the maintenance they required. Also it takes a while to get used to the weight of the extra hair and you need to invest in a very soft pillow as it feels like you’re sleeping on a bag of peas at first:D

With the real hair extension you get to keep the hair even after the extensions have been removed and can have them re attached at any time. I’ve got a box of hair carefully packed away - I doubt I’ll ever have them reattached but every time I get the box out to throw it away I think of how much money it cost (typical paki :hehe:)

Re: Hair Extensions

its prom time in my school..and almost all of the girls are gettin extensions..being a desi i just think its stupid and waste of my money!

Re: Hair Extensions

Sara, what exactly is the problem with your hair? Is it too thin or what? I personally think its too expensive, a wig would be a better investment then :cb:
