Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

I’ve been browsing the internet and haven’t been able to get a proper answer. I’m referring to real human hair rather than synthetic.

Does anyone know?

I have the same question for eyelashes…are they acceptable in Islam.

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

Human hair ones are considered haram but with synthetic extensions there is a difference of opinion:

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) said: “Allah has cursed the woman who joins (her or someone else’s) hair (with the hair of another man or a woman) and the woman who asks for her hair to be joined (with the hair of another person) and the one who tattoos (herself or someone else) and the one asks to get tattooed.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 5589)

**The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) forbade this to such an extent that he did not even permit it for a woman whose natural hair had fallen off.
**

It is stated in al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya:

“To join one’s hair with the hair of another human is unlawful (haram), whether it is one’s own (removed) hair or someone else’s hair, as mentioned in al-Ikhtiyar sharh al-Mukhtar. However, there is nothing wrong (la ba’s) for a woman to put the fur (hair) of a camel or a goat (m: or other animals except a pig) in her hair strands, as mentioned in Qadikhan.” (al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya, 5/358)

**The permissibility of using synthetic hair is related from Sayyiduna Abd Allah ibn Abbas, Sayyida Umm Salama, Sayyida A’isha (who narrates the Hadith prohibiting using human hair) and other Companions (Allah be pleased with them all). (See: Ayni, Umdat al-Qari Sharh Sahih al-Bukhari, 22/64) **

**Some scholars disliked the joining of even synthetic and animal hair if it was completely attached and fitted to one’s own hair in a way that it is difficult to differentiate between the two, as it is a form of deception. However, many scholars permit it even if the wig or synthetic hair was completely fitted into one’s own hair. **

Have to admit I find the ‘deception’ argument on its own a bit dodgy cos nearly every beauty enhancement out there could come under that heading inc things that we know are halal like colouring hair or using foundation or concealer..

Eyelashes apparently come under the same rulings as extensions..

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

I am not sure but I thought I read and also heard somewhere that wazu is not complete if we put on nail color or hair color as water does not reach the nail or hair.
Do you have any reference that hair color is allowed. Would appreciate it. Thanks

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

Never heard of this before, but common sense would say there's no reason for them to be haraam, unless you're actually using them to display your hair in public.

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

:cb: what do you think they will be used for instead?? to put extensions so that you can hide that under the hijab or something?

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

yeah I was going to say that, extensions defeat the purpose of hijab and vice versa. But for someone who doesn't observe it synthetic hair extensions shouldn't really be a problem, I don't see a valid reason for them being haraam.

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

Thanks for that Deeba, very helpful post :k:

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

Well yes, human hair is haram as so iv heard.
Which is why i have bought synthetic hair extensions for myself, obviously synthetic is not better than human hair but it does look good on me. I dont wear them to school but i wear them in parties and many people thought it was my real hair, which is great :).But ye i would prefer humain hair more :P But i cant get them since they are haram.

Can women use hair dyes? Does it affect the validity of their wudu and ghusl?**

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question:**

Can a women dye her hair with the hair dye bought in shops that contains chemicals or will the wudu be invalid because the hair is coated with chemicals?
**
Answer:

Walaikum assalam,

1. It is permitted for women to use such a hair dye, with the conditions mentioned in the attached answer.

**2. It will not affect the validity of her ablutions (wudu) or purificatory bath (ghusl), because the coating is not considered a perceptible barrier.
**
And Allah alone gives success.

Wassalam,
Faraz Rabbani

Whilst other colours are ok pure black dye is classed as disliked by some scholars and totally haram by others so best steer clear of it if ur religious..

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

I use synthetic now (have used extensions on and off for 8 or so years) and much prefer them to human hair cos they’re a lot lighter and I like the glossier look.. A full head of human hair extensions is like having an actual pony’s tail stuck to the back of ur head lol, the one big disadvantage with synthetic tho is that I can’t use tongs or straighteners unless they have a matte coating (has to be rollers) or they’ll melt :bummer: (Some of the new clip-in ones can be heat-styled tho eg. the newest versions of the Jessica Simpson ones)..

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

haram, wigs etc are not permissible and so does the hair extensions.

EDIT|:erm after reading the thread itself i am confused myself.

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

^Humain hair extensions = defo not allowed
Synthetic hair extensions = allowed by many but not all..

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

Why do you need hair extensions anyway? Just grow your hair.

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah
hahahahahaahahah

haahaahahahaha

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

I already have long hair but it's really thin. I want to thicken it out.

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

Oh. so extensions are not just something you attach to the ends of your hair to make em longer? :s

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

not necessarily, sometimes its just to make the hair appear thicker and fuller....unfortuantely nto all girls are blessed with naturally nice hair, or experience hair loss/health problems/whatever, so they can't exactly "grow" it..

but that was such a cute "guy" thing to say...lol

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

My hairdresser told me once that some women can't grow their hair much past shoulder length no matter how long they wait..

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

^ that's true. I have a friend who cannot get past shoulder length and she's tried everything under the sun!!! Mine's butt length now but it's falling out so much due to stress and stuff, I just want something to thicken it out for special occassions etc.

I'll defs try and look for some good synthetic ones, are there any you recommend in particular Deeba? I'm just looking for clip in ones.

Re: Hair Extensions - Halal or Haram?

:hinna: i’ve read that getting those extensions can ruin the hair, pullit out and cause bald spots =(
