Hair Color

It is said that a wrong hair-color can REALLY make u look old. What color is your real hair and have you experimented with highlight/lowlights?

I’ve seen girls with really badly bleached hair and colors that are “IN” but don’t suit their complexions one bit yet they still get it done :smack:

Re: Hair Color

I think it is true that the wrong hair color can make one look older. In high school and college I dyed my hair random and different colors. I would change the entire hair color..then add highlights. Then dye it to something else ..add low lights...then also add highlights. I was extremely experimental. lol.

The most extreme thing I did was dye my hair a blondish/light brown shade and add blonde highlights to it.... I used Beyonce's haircolor as inspiration. This was when I was 18 years old. I naturally look much much younger for my age but this hair color and look completely transformed me and I was told that I looked like I was in my mid 20's.

I'm in my mid 20's now and and havnt dyed my hair in 3 years... so its back to my natural blue black hair color and I think I am going to stick with it now. I still look young for my age with my natural hair color but now the time has come where I want to look young for my age! haha

My complexion is "wheatish" ...that is what my mom calls it atleast. It has a lot of yellow undertones to it. I was able to get away with dying my hair random hair colors and it didnt look bad. But as Iv gotten older, I have realized that my natural super dark hair actually enhances my complexion more so. There is such a contrast between the two that they are both emphasized.

Took me a couple years to come to this realization....

Re: Hair Color

Gina,

Can you please post some pics of good and bad choices in hair colour?

Thanks!

Re: Hair Color

Well i once had chunky slices of blonde in my hair which made me look like a tart. Then i went for black hair and i looked ok but then i started to look like a witch. Then i did my hair red and it looked ok but then started to look ginger so i looked URGH. then i did it purple which looked wickeddd!! But then i got bored! Now im growing out bleach, purpley out my hair. To my natural colour which is light brown. Not sure if it suits me but i want my natural hair for now....

Re: Hair Color

I've experimented with every colour under the sun.. and surprisingly, i have no white hairs yet! :)

Natural hair colour is a mousy brown. I need to have it dyed as it's so dull and boring. Any suggestions, oh pretty one? :@:

Anyone ever tried mehendi?

My dadi maa has dyed her hair pretty much all her life and now she has orange hair! :rotfl:

it gives a very nice effect to dark hair (but will turn lighter hair orange!)

Personally, I would never dye my hair with mehendi or with chemicals! I think we need to be proud of what we naturally have. And pakistani girls have great hair, no?

Re: Hair Color

I wanted to dye my hair brown... but then I didn't

Now I feel like doing something funky.... But I cant seem to be able to let go of my black hair... I think I love it the way it is too much... but I reallLLly want to experiment... I think im just a scaredy cat :(

No one has seen my natural hair colour in 10 years. It's a brown-black that has auburn tints in the sun - so you would think I'd be satisfied.

My rule for colouring my hair is that it has to look "professional". I can't come to work looking tarty or done up - doesn't go with the corporate image. That being said, my stylist usually has me stay in a narrow range of colours. My fall/winter look is either all black hair or about one shade lighter brown than my natural colour with black lowlights - which I must some is an awesome look. My spring/summer look is a reddish/brown that is two-three shades lighter than my natural dark brown with a caramel-brown highlights (but the highlights are thin bits and all-over).

^ lol people dye hair according to seasons?

By the way, have u seen any problems with ur hair since you've been dying it for so long? Like, ur hair becoming dry, fall out etc?

Re: Hair Color

Huma - I dyed my hair like a million times through the years....from like age 16- 22 it was NEVER my natural hair color. I think the most extreme thing I did was dye it 10 times in a six month time period.

mashAllah my hair never became dry or fall out. My hair is almost down to my waist and It's the thing that I get the most compliments on. Very thick and shiny. People warned me that it would fall out due to damage but it never happened. However, I will note that I have always been very conscientious of taking care of my hair health (before dying it, during the years I dyed it and even now) .... weekly hot coconut oil/olive oil treatments, only washing it every 2-3 days as opposed to everyday, and always taking a multivitamin.

Both of your fall/winter and spring/summer looks sound so beautiful! It makes me want to start dying my hair again! :) Mabey once I get a job and can afford to have a stylist do my hair I'll start up again.

woww! Having healthy, thick and shiny hair is one of my dreams! (The other one is to have a clear skin!) I know oil treatments help soo much but the thing I find hard in the busy life is to stick to these treatments regularly. I would do it a couple of times and then forget about it for the next month!

Also, which multivitamins do u take?

This post is getting a bit off topic- sorry!

I definitely sympathize with you about finding the time to do oil treatments. I do mine on a weekend day and leave it on for as long as I can get away with it before I wash it out. I take my nani's advice that doing even a 20 minute oil treatment once a week is better than no treatment at all. So sometimes it is only on for that short of a time, other weekends I'll be able to keep it on all day because I am a hermit and don't leave the house. Iv made it a part of my daily weekend routine and treat it like its a task that needs to get done ... just like laundry or any other chore. It forces me to stay regular with it.

I used to take One a Day Women's Formula. I made the switch a year ago to Prescriptive Formulas: Optimal Vitamin Packs. A packet contains 1 multivitamin/mineral (which contains vitamins C, E, A, B-6, B-12, Folic Acid, and Green Tea/EGCG.), 1 Vitamin C tablet with Bioflavonoids, 1 B-Complex tablet, 1 Fish Oil tablet that contains Omega 3 & 6, 1 Calcium tablet with Vitamin D, and a Chromium Picolinate tablet.

Seems like alot I know- But my father is actually a physician and he recommended this particular brand for me to use. The packet thing is so convenient because it reminds you to take all the various vitamins/tablets.

PM me if you need more information about this or more hair related tips that do not have to do with hair dyeing as this thread is related to :)

Re: Hair Color

punjabi rose i have a question dat do u get bleached ur hair first b4 applying any color?bcuz black hair dont catch the right desired colored widout bleach or color cut them 1st..n bleach makes them the worst(although u hv told abut ur hair condition) but im so afraid of get my hair bleached just falling n falling n split ends..n if u use bleach then u have to use it every time wen u take ur new color or wat?

Re: Hair Color

I dyed my hair a blonde colour it turned out gingerish browny horrible colour It looked ok but never again...So now I try colours like red but not bright red..just so it shows in the light and now I want to try a dark plum colour :)

Re: Hair Color

slightly off topic but i think hair amount/condition is largely down to what you have been blessed with.
for example, my cousin. she has a terrible diet (fruit and veg are out of the question), never takes a vitamins, never does anything for her hair. her skin is in bad condition, yet her hair, that's SO thick and silky and was down to her bum before we made her cut it.

anyhoo, punjabi rose, that does sound like a great combo of vits. i've been researching what i should take generally and have come with the the same kind of combo so having it in 1 pack sounds really good. i've already got everything now though - 1 multivit pack (Perfectil for skin, hair and nails), 1 vitC bottle, 1 fish oils + omega bottle + 1 calcium tablets.
The only problem is organising them, you can take calcium at the same time as iron (in the multivit) but I see your multi vit doesn't contain any.

As far as I know it's not uncommon to change your hair colour according to seasons - but maybe I'm the only one out there doing it - ladies any other seasonal hair colourers?

In terms of the health of my hair - it's been unchanged by dying - I usually do not colour any more than 3 times a years - I look for colours where even when it grows out the roots don't look terrible. The only thing my stylist wouldn't let me do was dye it and perm it at the same time (I was looking for a loose body wave to change things up). She said that would be too much chemical stress for my hair.

Stoppit - The multivitamin does not contain calcium because the packet contains a separate Calcium + VitaminD tablet. You must have missed that one as you reaad. But yea - I used to take a bunch of things separately and then my dad suggested this prescriptives forumula stuff. It’s sooooo convenient.

And yea … genetics may definitely have a large part of what my hair’s condition is. A lot of people in my family have super thick and shiny hair. Even my dad does! :cb:

PunjabiRose, I’m definitely buying these vitamins now that u told me ur dad, being a physician, recommended it. A doctor could prescribe something to me for the sake of commission but a dad will never prescrive something useless to his daughter.. so yeah, I’m buying these, say thanks your dad!

Stoppit, when u were describing ur cousin’s diet, I was thinking “OMG, that’s me!” .. haha lol… My diet sucks too.. I shouldn’t be complaining about bad hair or bad skin until I improve me fluid intake and my diet.

Ok I promise I’ll live a healthy lifestyle once I graduae from college in June … (yeah right :khumar: )

Re: Hair Color

@Punjabi Rose - I did read it. I meant you can't take a calcium pill at the same time as iron.. so for me that's an issue as my multivit does contain iron. Yours doesn't (contain iron) hence being able to take the calcium one alongside it :)
I need me Iron though.
