Re: Haggling
Are you North American? I'm from Canada. Besides our accent, I think the biggest hurdle for us when we haggle is that we give up too easily! In Can/States, we offer a price and if it's not accepted we usually walk away or pay what they say. When I haggle in Pakistan, I feel a little embarrassed arguing with shop owners or insisting on a price when they say no. Also, I really have no patience. I'd rather pay and just move on. But I've noticed that good hagglers keep at it however long it takes and they aren't embarrassed at all. And the shop owner eventually gives in! So that's my advice - if you like something have patience and stick with your price however long it takes. If they know that you're going to buy, they won't let you walk away.
Re: Haggling
take a local with you who can help bargain for you.
Haggling
One good tip is to haggle haggle haggle and if you're still not happy move to walk out of the shop! The shop keepers nearly always stop you and give you the price you want!
Re: Haggling
this reminds me of this joke…
…an American was visiting India and the host gave him a tip as to how to haggle successfully in India…he said…the rule of the thumb is to HALF the asking price…so, he goes to Chandni Chowk and tries to buy a decoration piece for his living room…here is how the conversation went:
American: how much is it?
Shop Keeper: Rs 500
American: how about Rs 250?
Shop Keeper: no sir! i can’t make money and i’ve a family to feed…
the American tries to walk away when the shop keeper calls him back and says:
Shop Keeper: well, you are the first customer first thing in the morning…yeah ok, you can have it for Rs 250
American: i’m sorry…i changed my mind…how about Rs 125?
Shop Keeper: i’m sorry…i paid more than that myself…it’s a genuine thing, sir…i’ve a family to feed, i don’t bargain!
the American walks away and then the shop keeper is desperate to make his first sale so he calls him back and says…well, i think you are a good man so i’ll take a loss…ok, take it for Rs 125!
the American says: i think it’s work ONLY Rs 62.50
Shop Keeper…[Hindi meN]: saale, FREE meN na le le!
the American asked the guy standing next to him to translate what he just said…when he heard the guy say “have it for FREE!”…he jumped 3 feet off the ground and made his FINAL offer:
OK, would you give me TWO for FREE? ![]()
Re: Haggling
LOL @ kkf bhai ![]()
Crown >> like all the ppl said above haggle away and always offer them less than half of what they asking for
bulk buy is good too and you can say i am going to buy a few things from you so cut me a deal
then at the end offer them less than what they asking for again and say im getting married and will be back for more things ![]()
Hope everything goes good for you, have a great time and dont forget to fill us in with what bargains you got ![]()
Haggling
Yeah and always say that you've got a huge family who are also looking for these things so you'll recommend them!
Re: Haggling
Hey all,
Thanks for all the great advise… I did go last year and to be honest most shop keepers didn’t care if we walked.
We had some one from there with us which did kinda help but one shop owner had the nerve to say “ofcourse you can offerd this after all you must have paid a lot for all your tickets”
cheeky git lol because there were 6 of us.
The one thing i struggled with is the conversion rate. Whats the best way to do this
Re: Haggling
Keep a calculator. Or know the rate for 1000 rs in your currency. That way you can do some quick math in your head.
Also, if they say: you must be rich you spent so much on flights, say: actually I'm poor because I spent so much on flights! Have some answers ready lol if you're into the game it's actually quite amusing :)
