Pakistan’s 12-man squad for SA Tests

Mohammad Hafeez has been dropped for Pakistan’s Test series against South Africa in the UAE. Fast bowler Mohammad Irfan has made a return in the 12-man squad named by the PCB. The board will expand the squad to 15 following Pakistan A’s match against the touring South Africans, between October 8 and 10, in Sharjah.
Hafeez was expected to miss out, given his poor form in Test cricket this year. He has aggregated 102 runs in 10 Test innings this year, and was particularly exposed against the moving ball by Dale Steyn on Pakistan’s tour to South Africa in February. Pakistan have not played top-level opposition in Test cricket since, but Hafeez’s struggles in the long format continued against Zimbabwe in September - he scored 59 in four Test innings on that tour, despite being the Man of the Series in the ODIs.
Pacer Wahab Riaz also misses out from the squad that played the Zimbabwe Tests. Pakistan had drawn that series 1-1, with Zimbabwe recording their first win against Pakistan in 15 years in the second Test. Against South Africa in February, Pakistan had lost the Tests 0-3. Irfan had featured in that series, but missed out in Zimbabwe; now he returns.
Batsmen Asad Shafiq, Faisal Iqbal and Shan Masood, and seamer Eshan Adil, also miss out from the squad that played Zimbabwe, but unlike Riaz and Hafeez, they were named in the Pakistan A squad for game against the South Africans, so they could still feature in the final Test 15 if they impress in that match. Shafiq is most likely to be one of the three players added to the squad.
The only new face in the squad is left-arm spinnerZulfiqar Babar. Babar, 34, has been part of the domestic circuit for more than ten years and featured in T20s previously, but is yet to debut in Test cricket for Pakistan. The team management is mulling playing three spinners in the line-up, and so Babar could fit in alongside Saeed Ajmal and Abdur Rehman.
Fast bowler Umar Gul, who was targetting a comeback against South Africa after being sidelined by a knee injury since March, is yet to return.

Re: Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests/ Squad announced

Re: Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests/ Squad announced

Now who is going to show Professor giri in the team

But if Khurram Manzoor is opening then axing Hafeez for Khurram will be another bad decision

Re: Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests/ Squad announced

He deserved the sack

Re: Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests/ Squad announced

glad that wahab riaz is dropped....wahab will never be a good prospect and we are wasting our time on him...plus we already have so many lefties..junaid, irfan, sohail tanveer, rahat ali, wahab riaz!

hafeez shd not play test matches again...

glad umar gul did not make a come back!

Umar akmal needs to be in the test squad

Re: Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests/ Squad announced

by the way I have never seen such pathetic state of pakistani team....there is nothing in bench especially batting is non existent. our batting was never good but we still had saeed anwar, inzi, salim malik, aamir sohail, mohammad yousaf, younis khan.....misbah also belongs to pre-2004 gang.....in last 10 years we have not produced even 25% of these players.......not even one decent batter!

Re: Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests/ Squad announced

and, what do you think is the reason? politics?

Re: Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests/ Squad announced

Sifarishi and Politics. Jus like the situation with the National issues, same state of affairs trickles down to PCB. They have the talent in the domestic cricket, just someone needs to be given a proper chance but the Sifarishi -tried, tested and failed - people always beat them out. Take the case of Faisal Iqbal - really how many chances will you give him to see he aint the international level player you want. Hafeez , Imran Farhat are another examples. At least the bowling isn't too bad but the keeping and openers and a Number spot for a test side are all in shambles.

Re: Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests/ Squad announced

Asad Shafiq, Ahmed Shahzad and Shan Masood can still make the test squad if they do well in the three-day practice match between Pakistan 'A' and South Africa in Sharjah starting from October 8.

Umar Akmal is not even included in the Pakistan A squad which is a joke imo. He should have been an automatic choice in Tests after Pakistan's batting failures in Zimbabwe

Re: Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests/ Squad announced

I think after the practice match, they definitely need an opener unless they plan to use Azhar Ali there and move around the whole order (unlikely). So Ahmed Shahzad probably will be added to open with Khurram Manzoor. I think they'll probably add Asad Shafiq although I would like to see Sohaib Maqsood instead. Give someone else a try and SA will not have enough footage on him, so they wont know his weaknesses beforehand. It's a risk worth taking considering the batting failures in the recent tests. The 3rd spot may go to a bowler, fast/spin. It maybe Ehsan Adil/Ahmed Jamal or Usman Qadir for spin. Only time will tell. But please no Faisal Iqbal again.

Re: Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests/ Squad announced

Till Misbah is the captain UA cant come back into the Test Matches thats for sure

Re: Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests/ Squad announced

Misbah talking like Hafeez is Bradman! If anything it’s a blessing in disguise
Misbah confident Pakistan can cope without Hafeez

Re: Hafeez axed for South Africa Tests/ Squad announced

It wont be long before the Professor is back in the test squad ...
