Haemoglobin levels?

A normal range of hemoglobin is usually:

  • Men: 13.8 to 18.0 g/dL
  • Women: 12.1 to 15.1 g/dL

I got a 13.6 level, so what does it really mean? Can some one translate the level values into lay person’s better understanding?

Re: Haemoglobin levels?

So everything in medicine is a range. There is not one set value. You want to be within that range, whatever that is. Eg blood sugar, blood pressure, hemoglobin. Now hemoglobin is a tiny molecule inside your red blood cells (RBCs). Part of it's composition is iron, and that iron carries O2 to your body. Low hemoglobin roughly translates into low iron, aka anemia. That can lead to a whole lot of problems, and one of the main manifestations of it is pheeka color, or pallor. Now your hemoglobin levels are within the normal range, so you're good. Try to keep those levels. If they do go down, the first thing that one would do is to increase their iron consumption so eat iron rich foods. If that doesn't work, then one has to take iron supplements, and the doctor can determine which ones and which type you need.

Re: Haemoglobin levels?

mine was 13.7...

Re: Haemoglobin levels?

When I read this, I thought you meant A1C hemoglobin (where 13 is very very very dangerous!)

Re: Haemoglobin levels?

and i got scared reading that :(

Whats A1C hemoglobin?

Re: Haemoglobin levels?

mine was 10.something, so been given Ferrous Gluconate :(

Re: Haemoglobin levels?

My Mum's went down to 4 last year so they gave her a blood transfusion and she took liquid iron (fruit and veg extract). Its not a miracle cure but I can defo say its easier for the body to absorb than iron tablets.

Re: Haemoglobin levels?

A1c hemoglobin = glycosylated hemoglobin. This is formed when glucose in blood reacts with hemoglobin. A1c is therefore is an indicator of blood glucose levels in the recent past. A1c should be below 7%... if its higher it indicates that there was too much glucose in the blood hence high production of glycosylated hemoglobin. The only way A1c can be lowered is by controlling daily glucose levels.

Re: Haemoglobin levels?

Daffy, you rlevels are very good. Just keep on doing what you are. I started off 13 something as well when I got married. When I gave birth, my levels were down to 6! I was short of breath and fainted. Not a good time. They did give me iron supplements but apparently they didn't work. I climbed back to 13 again andf eel fine.

Re: Haemoglobin levels?

Can you guys get FERRUM CAPSULE from the doctor? I got them when i was around 9 and within 2 weeks with just a single capsule in between my dinner made it went up to 12!! and i continued taking it for 3months to become 13 again! It really works as my sister use to be 6 and she had many doctors checking her but nobody could help bring her hemoglobin level up but this doctor did and he gave this FERRUM CAPSULE which worked really really well,Alhamdolillah. So if any of you suffer from Anemia please do try them. And give me duas :)

Re: Haemoglobin levels?
