Hadith's That Make You Go Hmmm?

The following are some Hadith’s which I find questionable. I’m listing them here (not for amusement, although they may amuse) but rather for discussion. I was inspired to post them after reading a few other posts discussing the importance and legitimacy of Hadith. I can probably list a Hadith everyday which many would find questionable. Obviously these are Hadiths which are questionable, while there are many others which seem quite in line with the teachings of Islam (read - the teachings of the Qur’an). If Hadith’s like these exist though (which I personally find questionable), how reliable can we claim other Hadith and the collections as a whole? Shouldn’t they be viewed with some skepticism?

** Black Dogs are Devils and Should Be Killed Hadith **

I’m not really sure why, but these Hadith’s seem to indicate that dogs and in particular black dogs are the devil and should be killed. So perhaps the next Jihad should be against the black dog - the real devil. This is obviously not supported by the Qur’an and even at times contradict the Hadith literature itself.
*
Sahih Muslim Hadith Hadith 1032 Narrated byAbuDharr
O AbuDharr, what feature is there in a black dog which distinguishes it from the red dog and the yellow dog? He said: O son of my brother, I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) as you are asking me, and he said: The black dog is a devil.

Al-Tirmidhi Hadith Hadith 4102 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mughaffal
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Were dogs not a species of creature I should command that they all be killed; but kill every pure black one.”

Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 2840 Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah
The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered to kill dogs, and we were even killing a dog which a woman brought with her from the desert. Afterwards he forbade to kill them, saying: Confine yourselves to the type which is black. *

Now these Hadith’s contradict the one above, here helping dogs is rewarded, yes here Muslims are told to help dogs, not kill them:
*
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith Hadith 3.551 Narrated by Abu Huraira
Allah’s Apostle said, “While a man was walking he felt thirsty and went down a well and drank water from it. On coming out of it, he saw a dog panting and eating mud because of excessive thirst. The man said, 'This (dog) is suffering from the same problem as that of mine. So he (went down the well), filled his shoe with water, caught hold of it with his teeth and climbed up and watered the dog. Allah thanked him for his (good) deed and forgave him.” The people asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! Is there a reward for us in serving (the) animals?” He replied, “Yes, there is a reward for serving any animal.”

Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith Hadith 1.174 Narrated by Abu Huraira
The Prophet said, “A man saw a dog eating mud from (the severity of) thirst. So, that man took a shoe (and filled it) with water and kept on pouring the water for the dog till it quenched its thirst. So Allah approved of his deed and made him to enter Paradise.”
*
** Do Not Urinate in a Toilet Hadith **

According to this Hadith we cannot urinate in a toilet (which is a hole), so we are all sinning!
*
Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 29 Narrated by Abdullah ibn Sarjis
The Prophet (peace be upon him) prohibited to urinate in a hole. *

I just wasn’t sure why the following even has to be a Hadith, it seems like common sense. *

Sunan of Abu-DawoodHadith 70 Narrated by AbuHurayrah
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: None amongst you should urinate in standing water, then wash in it after sexual defilement. *

** Water is Always Pure and Clean Even if it Contains, Excrement, Dead Dogs (which are the devil) and Blood Hadith**
*
Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 67 Narrated by AbuSa’id al-Khudri
I heard that the people asked the Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him): Water is brought for you from the well of Buda’ah. It is a well in which dead dogs, menstrual clothes and excrement of people are thrown. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied: Verily water is pure and is not defiled by anything.
*

** The Golden Nose Hadith **

This one just sounds funny, doesn’t make much sense to me, maybe someone can help me.
*
Sunan of Abu-Dawood Hadith 4220 Narrated by Arfajah ibn As’ad
AbdurRahman ibn Tarafah said that his grandfather Arfajah ibn As’ad who had his nose cut off at the battle of al-Kilab got a silver nose, but it developed a stench, so the Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered him to get a gold nose.
*

** Disobey and Steal From Your Father and Allah Will Reward You Hadith **

In this Hadith, Man bin Yazid disobey’s his father, by stealing zakat money and is allowed to keep it, even though his own father objects. Moral of the story - disobey and steal from your parents.
*
Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith Hadith 2.503 Narrated by Man bin Yazid
My grandfather, my father and I gave the pledge of allegiance to Allah’s Apostle. The Prophet got me engaged and then got me married. One day I went to the Prophet with a complaint. My father Yazid had taken some gold coins for charity and kept them with a man in the mosque (to give them to the poor). But I went and took them and brought them to him (my father). My father said, "By Allah! I did not intend to give them to you. " I took (the case) to Allah’s Apostle. On that Allah’s Apostle said, “O Yazid! You will be rewarded for what you intended. O Man! Whatever you have taken is yours.” *

** Sneezing, Yawning, Menstrating, Vomiting, and Bleeding Noses are Satanic Acts Hadith **

Women who are menstrating, remember that you are performing an act of the devil.
*
Al-Tirmidhi Hadith Hadith 999 Narrated by Grandfather of Adi ibn Thabit
Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him) said: Sneezing, drowsing, yawning in prayer, also menstruation, vomiting and nose-bleeding are from (the acts of) Satan. *

Achtung

Achtung,
You have to realize that the isnaad or chain of narrators is extremely important in determining the authenticity of a hadith. If a hadith has been related by narrators with unblemished records or a hadith that has been related through various chains of narrators thus being known in arabic as mutawattir, there is a high chance that its authentic, as is agreed upon from scholars of all fiqh. If that is the case it is a hadith that came from the prophet of Allah (salalaho alaihe wasalam) and to challenge his word is to deny Allah's commmands since there are numerous commandments of Allah ordering us to follow the prophet. As a muslim, once something has been established as an order of Allah and his Rasool (salalaho alaihe wasalam), we are bound to carry it out without weighing the pros and cons. We must have full trust in Allah and his Rasool (salalaho alaihe wasalam) and should not question the wisdom behind the orders. However, it is not prohibited to approach a scholar for the possible explanation of such ahadith provided we don't judge them to be right or wrong based upon our perceptions. I am sure a knowledgable scholar will definately allay some of your confusion by shedding the light upon the meaning of theses ahadith.

Achtung, in most cases of hadith narrations, after the hadith subject, usually there's
brief note about the accuracy of the subject in question. It explains whether the narrator
of this hadiths has strong credibility, how this hadith had reached to him, and whether it (the subject) is in conflict with other
relevent strong and obvious observations made by some more reliable source. So if there's any doubt, usually it is mentioned that this hadith is ghareeb(weak in credibility). Check out this information, Iam sure it will help to resolve most of your doubts.

A lot of hadiths are for one particular case scenario, and cant be generalized

There is a term for these hadeeths. They are called "Zayeeef" hadiths, i.e., weak ones. I don't know about others, but in Fiqah-i-Jaferia, Aalims/scholars tend to weigh any given hadith with following two factors:

a. Narration chain and the character of personalities who have narrated the hadiths.

b. More importantly, How well does a particular hadith goes with Quran. Is it violating Quranic saying?? Is it incompatible with teachings of Quran. In other words, Quran is the ultimate identifier for the validity of hadith. If hadith is not in parallel with Quranic views, than most likely there is a flaw either in chain of Narrators or personalities of Narrators are doubtfull.

You are right about that, Imran. But please check out the Hadith that I have posted in another topic. They are from Bukhari's collection and have been determined authentic and not weak. Some that Achtung posted are also "authentic."
Zara

Achtung, where did you find those hadiths that you have posted above? Are they from internet or your personally read the hadith books and came to conlusion that we all should go hmmmmmmmmmm....please let me and let us know..thank you

Jaawan

** Explaination for the hadith regarding "DOGS"**

*Sahih Muslim - Book 23, Number 5248:

Narrated Maymunah:

One morning Allah's Messenger (peace_be_upon_him) was silent with grief. Maymunah said: Allah's Messenger, I find a change in your mood today.
Allah's Messenger (peace_be_upon_him) said: Gabriel had promised me that he would meet me last night, but he did not meet me. By Allah, he never broke his promises; and Allah's Messenger (peace_be_upon_him) spent the day in this sad (mood). Then it occurred to him that there had been a puppy under their cot. He gave an order and it was turned out. He then took some water in his hand and sprinkled it on the place. When it was evening Gabriel met him and he said to him: You promised me that you would meet me the previous night. He said: Yes, but we do not enter a house in which there is a dog or a picture. So the very next morning he commanded the dogs to be killed. He announced that the dog kept for the orchards should also be killed, but he spared the dog used for the protection of extensive fields (or big gardens). *
