Does anyone here go to a gym? I’ve just joined today and I’m not sure what to actually do? I wanna lose weight. Maybe drop down 1/2 dress sizes. And then tone up everywhere?
Re: gym routine.
When i first started i just walked on the treadmill at a fast pace in the first week. We have the tv treadmills so makes time fly.
in the second week i incorporated weights and walking/elliptical trainer/cycling. Also does your gym do classes? Classes are a really good way of getting fit and staying motivated.
I joined nike+ and it's a really good motivator. If you have an iPod with nike+ check it out.
But remember, to lose weight you also need to control your food. No point working out and then eating something huge.
Re: gym routine.
i do different things each week so for instance one week i will do:
1. 20 mins cross tainer
2.20 mins threadmill
3.20 mins cycle
4.5-10 mins stepper
5. 15 mins rowing
and i will finis it off with some weights for bout 5 mins, but nowadays i have chaned it up cos i get bored very easily so now i do
50 mins cross trainer
30 mins running
when i get home i will jus do ome jmping jacks
Re: gym routine.
Thanks for the replies!
Ks09 - yes i have Nike+! i'll remember to use it! Wish my gym had tv's..guess i'll just take my iPod in or be really efficient and take in all my science papers i have to read?
zayma -wow 50 mins cross trainer? thats crazy!
Re: gym routine.
cross trainer burns more calories than treadmill. i found it took around an hour of fast walking to burn 100 calories, on the cross trainer 1 hour was 200 calories, bit addicted to the cross trainer now
Re: gym routine.
I’ve found that high intensity interval training (High-intensity interval training - Wikipedia) works WAY better for me than just running.
Here’s what I do:
10 mins - run at 5.4 mph
Then for the next 20-25 mins I do 3 min walking followed by 2 mins of sprinting (7 mph)
Then another 10 mins at 5.4 mph
I’ve lost 1 dress size in 6 weeks.
If you’re just starting, vary the speed and duration according to what you’re comfy with. Just remember that the sprinting pace should not feel easy.

I think it depends the gym that i go to have machines that are older and then some newer ones, now wen i go on the treadmill that is old and i us it for 30mins i only burn about 135 cals and then when i use the newr treadmill i burn at least 200. On the crosstrainer in 50 mins i can easily burn 550 cals :d
Re: gym routine.
It's been one month since I joined the Gym (health studio). My major goal is to manage my weight.
I'm given a plan by my instructor which tells me to follow a few exercises for a whole week. Also I do 30 min treadmill , 20 min elliptical and 10-15 min cycling daily. now I am going to have a proper diet plan from dietitian after giving fat test, having a proper diet works alot.
Re: gym routine.
I'm a big fan of interval training. I'll do cardio (interval) at least 5 times a week. Basically I'll go on any machine- treadmill, elliptical, bike and do a 2 min/1 min interval where for 1 min I'm really gunning it and then the 2 min I slow down a bit to recover and then back to pushing myself. With this method I can burn the same amount of calories in 30 mins than most people typically burn in an hour. Along with the cardio I do weights; I alternate between lower body and upper body and do abs every day.
Re: gym routine.
Yeah I've heard of interval training and thats what i was gonna do!
Re: gym routine.
I was reading somewhere about a guy who does fitness videos on youtube and he advises 10 min sessions on treadmill/ cross trainer and star jumps. He runs at full speed for ten seconds the jumps onto the platform on the side of the treadmill then allows a ten second break then another ten seconds of running and another ten sec break. People on his webpage have left genuine reviews and pics and swear by it. To be fair i havent given it enough time and only did it twice but my gosh i was sweating like a bandar lol and sooo tired after the ten mins i physically felt like i couldnt do any more. But he recommends 1-6 of those ten min sessions atleast 5 times a eeek so on the day youre at home, do ten seconds of star jumps then stop then again and stop and so on. Trust me when i say you will feeeeel the burn. And ofcourse weights will help burn fat and tone up too. Good luck! :)
