Guys/girls born in UK/USA/Aust....

Born and raised in the US, I used to feel 100% American until I was like 16-17 when I started making some desi friends. Thankfully they introduced me to our beautiful Pakistani dress, desi music, desi movies, etc. Nowadays I’d say I’m a pretty healthy mix of the two cultures. In addition, my values/mores/ideals have only been enhanced towards a better understanding of myself, via these two wonderful cultures.

Do you feel more British/Aussie/American then Pakistani?

I was born in Britain, but dont really give it much thought. I mean, I'm far more British then Pakistani in terms of how I act, think and in concepts which are grounded in culture-this is my culture, but in some things I still support Pakistan...its an uncontrolable thing.

So which is it?

Whats your country-or are we just in a no mans land. To Pakistani to be accepted, but to Western to be "real" Pakistanis?

No one is saying that this country is "crap"-on the contrart, I love this nation.

This thread was opened to try and gauge people's loyalties.

Garcia's outburst was unnecessary and sad.

It doesnt matter whether you are born in US/UK/Pak. You still got the brown skin and your country of origin gives you the identity. Think about what "C" stands for in ABCD/BBCD etc and why its there.

Being a pakistani born in the UK I feel that the labelling that is sometimes given to people like me eg/ABCD/BBCD is really such a generalisation. I feel so lucky to have integrated with so many different cultures, races, religions and people and it gives me a wider understanding of people. I have become much more tolerant of others because of what I am. This doesn't mean that I am confused and have forgotten my roots or my religion. For me Islam will always come first no matter what country I live in.

As for 'my' culture, thats a different matter, because 'my' culturisation will ALWAYS be different from someone who has been born and brought up in pakistan, solely because of the influences of society etc etc, so we cannot compare the two, also just because some1 is brought up in a muslim majority country its such a generalisation to say that they will have higher morals, be more religious and be better people overall. I am extremely aware of who I am, and very strong minded in my beliefs, I will never compromise on my religion just because im british Pakistani.

I feel proud that I have lived in a western country and still stood my ground over what I am, and not get affected by the evils and corruption of the west. We should be thinking towards peace and unity, there are enough troubles in the world without pakistani's creating divisions within themselves as well.....so we should refrain from using terms such as ABCD/BBCD/FOB/FRESHIE'S/ETC..

and hey what the heck am proud to be an out n out

I don't feel like an American or a Pakistani. I know when I went to Pakistan for a visit, I felt totally lost because my values, my ideas did not match those of the people who lived around me. Atleast in the US, I feel more at home.

Thats a fair reflection of my views too.

As I said in ma previous post, 'their' culture is not ours, but we can just do our best to integrate as much as we can when we do go back home, and it happens to me also, when i go back home to pakistan there are certain things I LOVE ABOUT IT, and some things piss me off and irritate the crap out of me. But hey that's life folks......
