Acceptable, less offensive and better tempered are all perspectives. What we all need are yardsticks, against which we put our own righteous conforming selves in perspective.

Fair enough. All of these are a matter of perspective.

But why is conforming to those socially accepted yardsticks, while still retaining the essence of one’s individuality, so wrong or objectionable? It’s not a matter of being accepted by or pleasing the masses, but why go out of your way to incite the contempt of the masses?
