Wow your friend is an idiot. Firstly there is a reason why there is a phrase "don't mix business with pleasure." She did just that (in an obtuse manner). Firstly she should not have spoken to a co-worker about it. Pretty dumbass move to do in the first place. Private stuff should stay with friends outside of work.
Then she continued to confide in him. Another dumbass move. Additionally I can bet all my time in Darfur that she didn't just confide in him....it was a bit more than that. I am not saying she slept with the guy. But she did replace her husband with him for emotional or psychological comfort. They got comfortable. That again is a dumbass move.
That of course doesn't excuse this prick from his actions and his attitude. The woman was the first one to instigate the situation and let it continue. She has to deal with the situation she created.
And frankly the guy should be castrated for his actions. She is married, he should back off.
No kidding I have been on hmmm 2 girls waiting list for a long time. When ever their hubbies make them cry then will call and check my status.
Till they had babies.

As much as I hate to believe that, I feel this is what happened as well.
The guy is not some lonely hero type romeo with long flowing hair and a buttonless shirt, but a regular professional at her workplace. I am quite sure she must have said things in her times of high emotions that perhaps weren't intended to come accross that way but did.
I did mention this to her and asked her if she had led him on in any way and she says that she doesn't remember doing that but does feel bad to have taken advantage of his time and patience.
Anyhow, she is going to talk to him one more time.
No, its very fair to blame the guy. The girl came to him probably because she trusted him and wanted a male perspective on her situation. That probably does not mean that she was hinting that she is over with her guy and seeking a replacement.
The guy was stupid to get a different message out of her talk.
If guy is to blame then she shld be able to call HR but she wont call HR makes me think she did give him signals in emails she sent.
Anyway now i think she shld ignore his mails and when she talks to him tell him: she enjoyed his frndship but if he continues she will be sad to lose a frnd.
or try getting him a hooker..... Tell him if thats what he wanned for the time he spent with her.
