What guthii or gurrhti have you given to your child and what is recommended?
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
Sugar. Just a little sprinkle
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
the word is ghuTTi…isn’t it kinda desi potion you make for the mother and the baby? ![]()
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
^ it is called Tahneek in Arabic and is a sunnah.
As per sunnah, we did softened pulp of soaked date/khajoor for both my sons. My husband gave it to both the babies.
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
Agreed with Proto, Prophet SAW specifically used a dried date ( Chuwara) chewed it for a while and then give a tiny bit of the taste to a baby.
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
my huby gave to my daughter, same dried date
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
yes but we cant do the chewing part
infection he hogi. Prophet’s luaab-e-dehn was a totally different thing ![]()
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
So have you softened the date with boil water? Like keeping it in water overnight?
Gurrti or ghutii…
Some ppl do it with honey. Thats what is being done in our family but is it ok to give honey to new borns? Even if it isnt, at some points we cannot convince our elders.
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
if you convince your elders about sunnah,I am sure they will leave doing it with honey. Honey is not safe for newborns.
radiant light: I soaked it in zamzam for both my sons for 3-4 hours and I am sure boiled water will be fine too ![]()
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
What is this? Are we talking about at birth, like when the adhaan is given in the baby’s ear, or at another time? Is this a remedy for something. Please pardon my ignorance, I don’t think I’ve heard this term before
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
^
I don’t know the islamic logic behind it.
But my dad tells me the person giving the ‘ghurti’ the baby takes that person’s ‘addatein’ or becomes more like that person…usually a grand parent, nana or dadda! It’s probably not even true, just another desi thing we tend to do. I just kaam chalaad with sugar, because I didn’t have anything else, and I wasn’t gonna give honey (Botulism reasons)
For the girls it was my dad who gave them ‘sugar’ and for the boy it was my FIL. My mom insisted he gives baby the ghurti since after these years we all know who is the nicest in the family now ![]()
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
Soaked date for my kids. Definitely NO honey! Please don’t risk poisoning your babies.
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
I think my husband just chewed the dry date and touched the inside of cheek with that dry date. Nothing was swallowed or licked by the newborn.
My family strongly believes it should be from someone pious and not just anyone.. I believe my husband is the most pious man I know in my life and won’t choose anyone else over him, no matter what the gender of child. ![]()
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
My son was just nursed, we did not give him any honey or dates.
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
We didn’t give anything to our three girls, I just nursed them ![]()
With my firstborn (born in Florida), thankfully I asked the nurse if we could give her honey. She gave me a horrified look and then said "no, that’s not safe for babies’. My mom was there for my delivery and she said there’s no need to give anything and when my in-laws asked my husband, he said haan shehad chataa dee (to get them off his back I guess).
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
Both my children received some honey.
Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
Chocolate

Re: Gurrti or ghutii…
I love chocolate! I’m eating some right now, well, a brownie actually. ![]()
The desi logic has some religious background…you should have a pious person do the ghutti…that’s where the adoptive habits thing comes from.
Khatti - ghutti is done to a newborn…generally after the adhan…usually a softened date..cos that was sunnah.
