Traditionally you make it with gurh or jaggery. There are two kinds the drier type which has the consistency of kheer and the liquid type which is known as rasawl and is soup like in consistency.

Aj, if you want without ghur, you can just make zarda.

By the way you can find ghur or brown sugar in any gocery store.
