heh…maybe we should have a stock tipping contest.
^ Or we can have a fantasy league of stock. On the start date, people should select their favorite mix of stocks worth $10,000. Track their progress, and we'll see which person is the richest (figuritively speaking) at the end of the six-months.
hmmm.....that can be done. I already have the software written for all that. How about some rules and then we can give it a go.
I'd also be interested to know the number of ppl interested in the whole thing.
im interested
Rules (although …being a techie…I wouldnt know) :
- Each GS user gets $10,000
- can invest in all major markets (US,London,AllOrds,HK,etc)
- USD15 per trade (?)
- can buy/sell any time during the period (6 months?)
- cant see anyone else’s portfolio except for the total value
- more?
The interface will look something like this (click). Only diff will be that it’ll be webbased and no download will be required. What changes should be made?
Oh yea there wont be any analysis tools in it. ![]()
Ps. man! only If I had invested in these stocks when I wrote this software 10 months ago
Bro this is a good idea, I wouldn't mind just covering the FTSE 100 for a a little while, I could do with the motivation. Possibly Europe. Interface is simple and that's all we need. Whats the next step?
This is a great idea. I'm interested :)
man that would be so gd... i am in should be great fun :p
wm how soon will it be updated?...how r u going to get uptodate stock info? i mean can u keep track of other stocks u want to buy... liek a favoriet thing.
sounds interesting..
and educational.. i am in.. but i'll definitely need help though.
I suggested 14 stocks on the 28th of August in Tom Sawyers stock tip post. Let's convert these stocks into a portfolio and see their performance in the last 5 days. I have applied the following rules in creating the portfolio.
1-Start with 15000 USD
2-No stock above 50, this takes out NHY from my tips
3-Buy 300 shares for stocks <$2
4-Buy 200 shares for stocks $2-5
5-Buy 100 shares for stocks $5-20
6-Buy 50 shares for stocks > $20
7-Buy at closing price of 28 August
8-Commission of 11 dollars per trade
Here are the results

476 dollars in four days of trading. Not bad eh?
^^ oh boy, this looks so confusing :~S
Can we short too ;)
shorts and longs I hope. By the way will the data be realtime -20 mins or will we have to put in the buy and sell prices ourselves? Also isnt it possible to just do the same thing on the motley fool web site?
Btw I like the idea and I am in.
3% over a few days is pretty good. Now after you take out the 33% tax for cashing out so quickly you may think about it differently :)
I was just thinking of this.
Must be shorts and Shorts and Longs, or cash could end up being the winner.
What about prices? Mid-Day? End of Day?
I'm in.
Count me IN!
Ok. Now we are getting some replies.
It'll be up with in a week, just integrating with GS accounts etc.
I can add a watch list, but maybe later. Stock prices will have a 20 min delay. I am adding other markets because most of us are in different regions, so it might be easier for me to invest in Australia than the US
You just enter Stock.Market (FLEX.US or ORI.AX) it'll give you the price and you buy.
What are shorts and longs? Is that something like buying/selling stocks you dont own (blah!)? I am an engineer guys :p so help me. How does it work?
Do I need to consider any other rules?
I'd suggest a rule be added that not more than 15% can be in cash or the last sell trade is invalid. Some cash must be allowed otherwise you're forcing me to sell only when I have something else to buy (and that's not realistic)
Tom Sawyer,
What is that with the 15% cash rule? Who cares? This is a free market simulation. If you want to sit there with a pile of cash earning no interest, then so be it. There are lots of times when cash is just peachy. Some invalidation rule just complicates it for everyone.
The fewer rules the better.
Who Me,
Short selling is the precise opposite of buying. You essentially sell a borrowed stock hoping that you will buy it at a later time when the price is lower and repay the borrowed stock. It is a bet that the stock will decline.
I suggest that the winner get a years free GS membership!
The loser gets a five year membership to World Affairs only!
So how does it happen. I tell my broker that I want to short sell and he gives me money?
