since my original thread on this issue got shut down, before i even got a chance to read any of the relevant replies, iam hencing opening another thread in religion this time.
Is it just me, or more and more sunnis are getting inspired by the shia belief. You ask any average muslim, about the importance of 10th Muharram and he’ll tell you the Imam Hussein story. Sunnis actively take part in shia proceedings every Muharram, even when they know that it is forbidden to do *afsos *of any deceased individual for more than 3 days. There are many sunni subsects out there that are so inspired by Shia beliefs, you could easily mistake them for one another.
The colorless GS banner proves that “heck with the truth, all we gotta do is please others, regardless of weather they are on the truth or not.”
whatever happened to the idealogy the Muslims lived and died by?
firstly i think its great that a significant number of sunnis observe Muharram along with Shias. sunnis attending shia processions and shias attending sunni processions (i attended a large Sunni Muharram procession yesterday) bridges divides and demonstrates to a much smaller segment of the Islamic world that our differences can diminish should we want them to without sacrificing on the stances of our respective schools of thought. we have similar views of History, and similar derivations from it about the cruelty of Yazed and the tragedy of Hussain. If Sunnis do not mourn it but observe it in remembrance there is very little wrong with it, except ofcourse for those few who wish for more and not less rancour. attaching significance to muharram has been a feature of this nation from much before you came along to challenge it, try picking up Iqbal's poetry on Hussain and tell me everyone in the Muslim world except the Shias forgot it after 3 days.
As far as Gupshup though, I dont believe they are taking any sides on the issue. This is a pakistani site, and it reflects the sensibilities of the nation. Every major media outlet, whether government or private has observed it similarly. Ashura has been on Ptv from as long as I remember it, and that has nothing to do with your perception of modern sunnis being subverted by Shias, or whether the President of Pakistan is also weeping. It is simply a reflection that a significant number of Pakistanis observe this occasion with solemnity if not mourning, and is completely appropriate.
