Guppy girls - serious question

This is for the larkiyaan on this Forum, i would really appreciate an honest answer to this question. It’s regarding hiking; i realize the query will definitely sound trivial. However, please just answer it honestly and/or give your thoughts about what you think of the ‘issue’. It applies exclusively for gals who are currently residing in Pakistan.

Have you yourself, or do you know a female relative, who went hiking? Specific requirements:

  • the hiking trail must be at least a day long
  • hiking trail must be an ‘authentic’ hiking trail, such that a jeep would not be able to go on it
  • i’m afraid that Murree or Kaghan naran won’t count
  • you have to have gone hiking without your parents, for example, with your brother(s) or cousins

i really want to know how many Pakistani girls we have in this Forum, currently residing in Pakistan, who have done the above, (if you know a female relative, sister/cousin/friend/aunt who went hiking, that counts as well). It sounds like the stupidest question i have ever asked on Gupshup, i FULLY realize this, but it’s for something that i consider important.

BTW, i am placing the thread in this Forum because it’s a question pertaining to diverse lifestyles of females in Pakistan as opposed to Pakistani girls who reside abroad.

My sisters used to go to Girl Guide Camps while at college. Does that count?

I guess not, because serious hiking was never involved in those.

Sorry, Girl Guide camps will not count either.

ONLY bonafide, real hiking. So - any Pakistani girls out there currently residing in Pakistan who have done the above, or do you know a female relative who has done the above? There's gotta be some out there.

My family lives in the northern areas and there is a Pahar near my dada jee's home that the entire family would do a day hike to the top of, have lunch and hike back down.

Amelie :flower1: Thanks so much for your response. This is very important to me. Do you mind if i ask - did you ever go hiking there by yourself, or with your brothers/cousins, etc. - in the absence of your parents? Would you consider going hiking there without your parents? Do you think that’s uncommon for Pakistani girls residing in Pakistan?

Sorry, one more question - when you say “pahar”, was it like a large hill relatively easy to climb — or was it an actual hiking trail, very windy and narrow? Sorry for all the requirements.

there are very few males in Pakistan who go for hiking let alone girls.. only serious hikers I seen in northern parts of pakistan are foreigners..

hmmmmmmm,

I think most of my cousins are allowed to go on such trips for a day hike/day trip as long as thre are older married baji's along or a brother too.

It's a big hill, but it does take 3 hours at least to go there..and I have never seen any hiking trail there, no one hikes there except our family at that's perhaps 1-2x a year.

As for uncommon for pakistan, I think that's hard for me to say. My family is pretty nice about the cousins hanging out with each other and no one says a thing however other families may not be as open minded.

My sister in law has never left Pakistan but claims to be a fan of hiking. I'll try and see if I get the answer from her.

Degas - oh alright, i see. Thank you for your honest response, i appreciate it.

Amelie - Thank you :flower1: That clarifies it for me. Thanks for your responses in this thread, much appreciated.

Mad_Scientist - Please, please, please do. It’s important (for me). If you get her response, please let me know.

Thanks you three. :flower1: i still hope i get a few more responses - i am certain we must have more Guppy gals residing in Pakistan.

Discrimination!

I had a friend who went hiking alone, she hasn't returned since 1986.
Pino if you read this pm me.

I wanted to but was short of time Nadia when i was in Nathia gali this august, there is an area knows as green point/green resorts, where mostly people own their little cute cottages and spend thier vacations / free time with families and along with it there is a hiking track which is so beautiful it would take your breath away..... i wanted to go for hiking but certainly not alone, cuz i dont know why ,but up there in those mountainious areas,i always have a fear of being alone among ajjnabi people....plus my family would not have allowed me to roam around those areas all by myself .....

I also watched a Tv travel show, sometime back where that anchor person was enjoying hiking in that nathiagali area, and he recommended not to miss that place for hiking.... hope this helps :-)

I don't think you're expecting a reply from a male guppie, but my sister used to be the biggest tom boy, and something I always envied while growing up. She learnt swimming before me, she is an excellent biker, and she was always a better rower when we used to go rowing; very smooth with tremendous amount of endurance. On few occasions we did go for very long mountaineering trips, for instance, when our parents were just resting, or didn't feel like accompanying us, but all of those were day long trips.

Then it all changed after high school. She went straight to med school, and I ended up in NA. Now, she is happily married with three kids :) If I may ask, why are inquiring all this..

Northern area r best for hiking… n its safe too if u want to go alone.. too bad it wasnt one of ur options.. whenever i went there, those beautiful hiking trails really took my breath away…it was just that i get out of breath too easily … i went hiking with my frends once.. it was long … but we didnt stay for the night..

Apart from northern areas… i guess there should b nice hiking trail near islamabad .. around Margalla hills i suppose.. but u better find out if its safe to go alone there… closer to the city closer to all the meanest trouble u can ever imagine.. i hope u get my point… … adios. :flower1:

My mother, she would go with her friend or friends sometimes, when she was younger in NWFP mostly.

Re: Guppy girls - serious question

yes i have been hiking at a certain stage in ma life…

the track i remember now is from serri-payay to abbotabad… it takes 2 days… n a special track for hiking which passes through a jungle… no vehicle can go there!!!

Re: Guppy girls - serious question

i'm always in for hiking.... i have hiked in swat, bahrain the trail is 3 days long... i hiked there with my cousins and chacho 2 years back..

i've also hiked in kalam, abottabad, nathia gali...

Nadia_H there are some tracks also in murree and naran kaghan which are only hicking tracks i-e no jeeps can move on them and the path is surrounded by the forest.. most of the tracks in murree lead u to abbotabad...

i've also seen the track shap mentioned but due to shortage of time i cudnt hike on that 1...

Thanks so much, everyone, for your replies.

>>plus my family would not have allowed me to roam around those areas all by myself …<<
Kashish, Would your family allow you to go with a group of friends? Your answer did help, thank you so much.

Outlaw, Okay phew So your sister has gone on an all-day hiking trip? And i take it that the hiking trail was a genuine hiking trail, right, nothing that you could cross with any vehicle?
The reason i am asking all of this is partially because i would like to know whether there are Pakistani girls, currently residing in Pakistan, who do approximately the same type of hiking that i do here in Canada. Sounds silly, and i am sure the query initially sounds that way. i asked my Ammi about it as well, whether she had ever gone hiking. Her response was, back in those days if you asked for permission to go hiking (as a girl), the response from parents would be, “Dimaagh kharaab hai?” It’s a lifestyle-cultural thing, i would like to know how far, or apart, some of my habits are from those of Pakistani girls residing in Pakistan.

>>i went hiking with my frends once.. it was long … but we didnt stay for the night..<<
aha! :~D Aleezay, Thank you so much for responding here :flower1: So you went hiking with a bunch of friends? If you don’t mind my asking, were your parents with you?

Munni, Were those ‘real’ hiking trails, like the ones that are bonafide, rough hiking paths?

Shap_Bee, wow awesome. Thank you so much:D i REALLY appreciate your letting me know that, thank you.

Aasha, Do you mind if i ask, when you go hiking (it sounds like you go fairly often), do you go with your parents, or, just with your cousins/brothers/friends?

Thank you everyone so much. i appreciate it greatly.

Nadia....i understand now about your curiousity :)
i dont think they would allow me to go out with friends either, with cousins and family, its a different matter probably...!

that's right Nadia, I and my sister have hiked quite a bit in the Northern Areas; swat, and Hunza. Although, we never went alone to those places on a dedicated hiking trip.

If you are interested in actually finding out more, alpine club of Pakistan may be your best resource to get know some of the die-hard women mountaineers. But, I doubt there're any, or at least I am not aware. I am not sure if it’s much of a cultural thing. Let's say that if you were to actually grow up in those areas, then morning walk to school could also become a rigorous hike. I am not sure if any women living in those areas do this kind of stuff for the sheer pleasure of mountaineering. They do it, since it's part of their daily routine, and the areas are so backward, when it comes to basic infrastructure.

Over here, there's more exposure to such activities, and amenities and industry to actually support enthusiasts. So, yeah I guess it can be a cultural issue in a sense, where Pakistani parents may not allow their daughters to go on an extended hiking trip with a bunch of guys. But, wouldn’t it almost be the same case for desi girls living here..? not too sure myself..
