Suspected militants on Sunday assassinated a pro-government tribal elder in northwestern Pakistan’s tribal region, North Waziristan, a witness said.
Malik Takhti Khan was gunned down by two face-covered gunmen while he was buying items in a weekly bazaar in Mir Ali, a major town in North Waziristan, the witness who declined to be named said.
The victim died on the spot and the assailants fled after the attack.
Malik became a target of the militants’ attack for his help with the government in its campaign against the militants, according to local sources.
More than 100 pro-government tribal elders have been killed in the northwestern Pakistan’s tribal region, Waziristan, over the past several months.
