Islamabad, Dec. 19: Pakistan’s renowned painter Guljee was found dead on Wednesday in his Karachi house along with his wife and maid, the police said.
Abid Soomro of the Boat Basin Police Station said that Amin Guljee informed the police about the death of his father when he came to visit his parents earlier in the day. The police thinks the possible killing took place at least four days back. “There is no sign of any bullet hole or dagger. Perhaps they died of suffocation,” the police official said adding, “We will know more when the autopsy report comes.”
Ismail Gulgee was an award-winning, world famous Pakistani artist who was born in Peshawar on October 25, 1926. A qualified engineer from the US, he was a self-taught abstract and portrait painter.
From about 1960, Guljee was noted as an abstract painter influenced by the tradition of Islamic calligraphy and by the American “action painting”. The first exhibition of his art-work was held in 1950.
The legendary Ismail Gulgee was entirely self-taught, and was renowned as a portrait painter in his early career.
