Re: Gul Khan , Gul Bibi

What is the reason of such flowery name?

Rani

Re: Gul Khan , Gul Bibi

I'm not certain why we have so many flower related names. I just thought of a few more actually:

Reday ړيدې (poppy)
Gedi ګېډئ (bunch of flowers)
Babrak بابرک (flower)
Ghatool غټول (tulip)
Gulab ګلاب (rose)

Come to think of it, we seem to have loads of plant related names.

General Rani... :)

bargad, neem, ?

Re: Gul Khan , Gul Bibi

raat ki Rani is flower. Aren't there any typical Punjabi flower names which are also used for humans? Like I gave an example of Raabel in Sindh

Re: Gul Khan , Gul Bibi

What about Gul e Laala which is normally shorten to Laalai?

Re: Gul Khan , Gul Bibi

  • Gulabo :aejaz:or Gulaab jaana

Firdous means garden (as well paradise), does that count? Instead of a flower, you have the entire garden, I think it should count.

Re: Gul Khan , Gul Bibi

No, I don't think so and not getting in mind at the moment; if there is any

Re: Gul Khan , Gul Bibi

Re: Gul Khan , Gul Bibi

Re: Gul Khan , Gul Bibi

rehan and Rehana will then count as well

Re: Gul Khan , Gul Bibi

Shamshad شمشاد (a specific type of tree, I believe it’s called a “box tree” in English)
Apana آپانه (almond)
Zaituna زېتونه (olive)
Narenja نارنجه (orange, as in the fruit not the colour)
Khatol خاټول (golden poppy)

Warda is rose (red one probably) in Arabic

Re: Gul Khan , Gul Bibi

Phoolan devi?

Re: Gul Khan , Gul Bibi

That's interesting. Warda (spelled ورده in Pashto) means rose in Pashto as well. Another name that means rose is the Dari/Persian name Nasrin نسرین. It specifically means "wild rose." The name Nilofer/Niloofar نیلوفر is also flower related. It means "water lilly" in Dari/Persian.

May be we should open a thread on 'Arabic influence on local langauge' to discover words which are Arabic , but with the passage of time and variation in accent they can't be recognised as Arabic
