Guinea leader warns of fresh coup

**Guinea’s military leader has warned the army could mount a fresh coup if he were to step down after condemnation of the killing of protesters.**Human rights groups say 157 people died when soldiers fired live rounds on Monday’s opposition rally.

The protest was sparked by rumours that Capt Moussa Dadis Camara, who himself seized power in a bloodless coup in December, would run for president.

Earlier, opposition leaders rejected his offer to share power.

“This does not interest me in the slightest,” said Sidya Toure, leader of the country’s opposition Union of Republic Forces.

Capt Camara described the actions of the army on Monday as “out of control”.

The government says less than 60 people and most of those were trampled to death, not shot.

But Capt Camara warned that if he stepped down, the country would lunge into chaos.

“If the political leaders want me to, I’ll hand power over to them. They won’t even last two days,” he told the AFP news agency, adding that there would be “clashes within the army” if he left.
