Guidelines to cut emissions from power plants

After visiting kids with asthma, President Obama emphasizes need to cut carbon pollution

High time. Starting July 1 powder plants will have to cut carbon emission. Several stated and cities have already signed up. There will be naysayers from the Right. But we hear there is a Pakistani Godfather who will set them straight. If you ask him the right questions.

Discuss. Silently.

What kind of cuts exactly?

Re: Guidelines to cut emissions from power plants

Good question. The EPA was directed a year ago to come up with guidelines. These will be unveiled next week per the link.

Save gas, fart in a jar.

Re: Guidelines to cut emissions from power plants

Was recovering from cough. That post didn’t help.

I think from now on we should send asthamtic kids to every summit on air quality control.

Re: Guidelines to cut emissions from power plants

You mean so they can provide input per their experience? That is a great idea.

Just seems to tug at the heart strings.

Re: Guidelines to cut emissions from power plants

Am not sure if there is a hint of sarcasm buried in there somewhere. But still like the idea!

Most people attending such summits probably live in good neighborhoods with cleaner air. Not so for the poorer segment.

Originally started off as sarcastic hahaah but no I agree it would be a good idea. First hand experiences give a lot more perspective on the severity of an issue.

Re: Guidelines to cut emissions from power plants

There r some trends that.r quite consistent

Those whose family are in the front lines would not want a war. War hawks would be among those who r in the comforts of their office with no kith and kin in the front lines

Those who drive gas guzzlers and consume like there is no tomorrow probably live in nice neighborhoods away from pollution. While those that can’t afford gas guzzlers end up breathing the fumes from gas guzzlers.

The Congress is trying to roll back the initiatives on healthy food in public schools that the first lady championed. Less fries less soda less pizza more veggies. What’s not to like? This could be the ONLY healthy food poor kids may have access to.

Voter ID laws that target the poor.

Re: Guidelines to cut emissions from power plants

Some of the above, per some sticklers, may be off topic.

Re: Guidelines to cut emissions from power plants

Some details on EPA proposal June 3 WSJ

REDUCE 2005 level GHG emissions by 25 pct by 2020 and 30 pct by 2030.

This is not as severe as it appears. Emissions are already down 14 pct since 2005 due to lower consumption trend that is firmly in place. The coal lobby has teeth I guess.

Re: Guidelines to cut emissions from power plants

This proposal will be challenged in the courts. Industry groups are protesting this will increase electricity cost. Same old tune. The administration estimated utilities will spend 8.8 billion dollars annually. While the US Chamber of Commerce, that bastion of liberal principles, estimates the annual cost to the economy to be a whopping 50 billion. Probably pulled the number out of their collective ashes.

Re: Guidelines to cut emissions from power plants

The proposal would require coal rich WV to cut carbon emissions by 20 pct by 2030 while CO must cut by 35 pct. So different strokes for different folks.

Re: Guidelines to cut emissions from power plants

The us electricity production mix

Coal 39
Nat gas 27
Nuclear 19
Renewable (hydro wind biomass geothermal solar) 13
Petroleum 1 (must be diesel gensets?)
