I cant remember when and where my love with poetry started. I didnt even know what Urdu language was all about till the age of 11 as I was born and brought up in Kenya. It was only when I came to Pakistan in 1961 that I started learning Urdu. In those days I used to read Ghalib, Mir taqi mir and Iqbal. In fact Iqbal's Bang-e-daraa was the first poetry book I read and more than half of it just flew over my head. I still don't understand all of his poetry but than he was a genius and no one even comes close to him.

My favourite poets over the years have been and in no particular order:

  • Ahmed Faraz
  • faiz Ahmed Faiz
  • Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi
  • Qateel Shifaqi
  • Josh Maliabadi
  • Habib Jalib
  • Parveen Shakir
  • Javed Akhtar

Surprised as you might be but Fakhira is not one of my favourites.

First of my favourite piece of poetry, it is one I never tire of reading:

**ai mohabbat tere anjaam pe ronaa aayaa
jaane kyon aaj tere naam pe ronaa aayaa

yuun to har shaam ummiidon mein guzar jaatii thii
aaj kuchh baat hai jo shaam pe ronaa aayaa

kabhii taqdiir kaa maatam kabhii duniyaaa kaa gilaa
manzil-e-ishq mein har gaam pe ronaa aayaa

jab huaa zikr zamaane mein mohabbat kaa 'Shake***el'*
mujh ko apane dil-e-naakaam pe ronaa aayaa
