Guest characters in games

What do you think about guest characters in games, i.e. characters that don’t exist in that particular continuity but are added in as a bonus. In general I’m not crazy about the idea, but it can be cool in certain instances.

Here are some games where I didn’t feel like it added value

Soul Calibur 2 (Link in the CGN version, Spawn on XBox and Heihachi on PS2)
Mortal Kombat X (Jason, Predator)

I thought they were cool in the following games:

Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (Dante)
Ninja Gaiden (Ayane)
Valkyria Chronicles (Vyse, Aika)
Super Smash Brothers (Sonic, Solid Snake)

I've heard they're adding predator from Alien films to the Mortal Kombat roster. That would be interesting.

Do you remember Mortal Kombat the SEGA game? Or am I too old :hinna: Used to be awesome, don’t know what happened to MK since!

I'm skeptical about it. I would feel the same way about guest characters in most fighting games.
