Guard your tongue, lest you get thrown in hellfire.

The imam gave a khutba on Guarding ones tongue from saying bad things and backbiting. I decided took look up some ahadeeth and ayats on it and post them here for all of us to read and ponder upon.

First of the imam told this incident. A number of Sahabah were sitting with the Prophet Sallallah Alaih Wasalam telling him about this really religious woman who prayed a lot at night and fasted during the day and gave a lot of charity and so on. Allah Sent the Angel Gibrael down to the Prophet Sallallah Alaih Wasalam to tell him that the Woman is in Hell fire. When the Prophet Sallallah Alaih Wasalam told this to the Sahabah they were surprised and asked him why. To this the Prophet Sallallah Alaih Wasalam replied that the woman backbited. I dont remember the chain of narration for this or authenticity, and i hope i didnt mess it up . May Allah forgive me if i did.

Here’s a lot of ayats and ahadith on the matter of protecting ones tongue.

  • “Not a word does one utter, except that there is an (angel) Watching, Ready to record it.” [Surah Qaaf:18]

  • “Verily,your Lord is Ever-Watchful." [Surah Al-Fajr:14]

  • Abu Hurairah (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) reported that the Prophet (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Whosoever believes in Allaah and the Last Day,then let him speak good or remain silent.”

  • Abu Moosaa Al-Ash’aree (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) reported:
I said:‘O Messenger of Allaah! Which of the Muslims is best?’ He (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) responded: ‘He whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe from.’

  • Abu Hurairah (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) reported that he heard the Prophet (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) say:
“Indeed, the servant (of Allaah) will speak a word while being unaware of (its consequences) and due to it he will be cast into the Hellfire, farther than the distance between the east and the west.”

  • Abu Hurairah (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) reported that the Prophet (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Indeed, the servant will speak words that are pleasing to Allaah due to which he will be given a condition in which Allaah will raise him many levels. And indeed, the servant will speak words that are displeasing to Allaah, due to which he will not be given a good condition, but (instead) be thrown into the Hellfire.”

  • It is reported in the Muwatta of Imaam Maalik and the books of At-Tirmidhee and Ibn Maajah from Bilaal Ibn Al-Haarith Al-Muznee (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) that the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Indeed,a man will speak with words that are pleasing to Allaah and by which he is not aware of what he has attained by it. Due to it, Allaah will record for him His Contentment (for him) until the day that he encounters Him. And indeed, a man will speak with words that are displeasing to Allaah by which he is not aware of what he has attained by it. Due to it,Allaah will record for him His Discontentment (with him) until the day that he encounters Him.”

  • Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudree (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) reported that the Prophet (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)said:
“When the Son of Aadam wakes from his sleep, all of his body parts seek refuge from his tongue, saying: ‘Fear Allaah with regard to us, for indeed we are part of you. So if you are upright, then we will be upright and if you are corrupt, then we shall be corrupt.”

  • Umm Habeebah (radyAllaahu ‘anhaa) reported that the Prophet (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Every speech of the Son of Aadam is against him not for him, except for commanding good and forbidding evil or the remembrance of Allaah, may He be Exalted."

  • Mu’aadh Ibn Jabal (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) reported:
“I said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah! Tell me of an act that will take me to Paradise and keep me away from the Hellfire.’
He said: ‘You have asked me about a major matter. But it is easy for he whom Allaah, may He be Exalted, makes it easy for. You must worship Allaah, associating nothing with him. You must perform the prayers and pay the Zakaat. You must fast in Ramadaan and perform the Hajj to the House (Ka’abah).’ Then he (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)said: ‘Shall I not show you the gates of goodness? Fasting is a shield; charity extinguishes sin as water extinguishes fire; and (so does) the praying of a man in the depths of the night.’ Then he (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) recited: ‘(Those)who forsake their beds to cry unto their Lord in fear and hope, and spend of what We have bestowed upon them. No soul knows what is kept hidden for them of joy,as a reward for what they used to do.’ [Surah As-Sajdah: 16] Then he (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: ‘Shall I not tell you of the peak of the matter, its pillar and its uppermost part?’ I said: ‘Yes,O Messenger of Allaah!’ He said: ‘The peak of the matter is Islaam. The pillar is prayer and its uppermost part is Jihaad. Shall I not tell you of what controls all that?’ I said: ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allaah.’ So he took a hold of his tongue and said: ‘Restrain this!’ I said: ‘O Prophet of Allaah, will we be held accountable for what we say?’ He (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “May your mother be bereaved of you, O Mu’aadh! ** Is there anything that causes people to be dragged on their faces – or he said –on their noses into Hellfire other than the harvests of their tongues?’”**

  • Abu Hurairah (radyAllaahu ‘anhu) reported that the Prophet (sallAllaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“From the goodness of an individual’s Islaam is that he abandons (talking about) those things which do not concern him.”

Re: Guard your tongue, lest you get thrown in hellfire.

:jazak: Br. Maniac.

Truly a horrible sin, yet for some reason, we do not heed it too much. No wonder the Prophet :saw: advised us to remain silent as much as possible.

Re: Guard your tongue, lest you get thrown in hellfire.

Thats exactly why i posted it. Most people donot realize how horrendous a sin it is and even if they do they still commit it. May Allah help us realize how bad this is and how the tongue can be the chief architect of our demise.

Re: Guard your tongue, lest you get thrown in hellfire.

I personally believe that gossiping and backbiting is a bigger sin and has a lot more horrible consequences than, say, eating a Big Mac...

Re: Guard your tongue, lest you get thrown in hellfire.

U like picking arguments don’t you? :hehe: Pretty soon, someone will differ with you … and there goes the whole thread.

Let’s just stick to one sin at a time.
Peace :rotato:

Re: Guard your tongue, lest you get thrown in hellfire.

Lol. I’m NOT sayin that eating a big mac ISN’T haram, but just trying to point out the hypocrisy of certain people.

You make a certain choice in ur life, like who u decide to marry or what you do to enjoy yourself, like goin to a club or party, and people like to jump on them for being kaffirs or sinners or whatever  This is especially true with desis, who think everything is their business and every neighbor/distant relative has a right to decide how you should live your life.

Simply put–if I eat a big mac, it’s my own sin. It isn’t gonna hurt my freinds the way, talking crap behind their back will.

Re: Guard your tongue, lest you get thrown in hellfire.

Sara, yes probably Saying bad things and/or backbiting is worse than eating a bigmac. Thats not the point of this thread though.

The point is to make people realize how bad a sin it is to let your tongue speak evil.

Re: Guard your tongue, lest you get thrown in hellfire.

And also, The evil of the tongue is not just confined to backbiting, but to any negative thing coming out of it that isnt justified i suppose.

Backbiting is one part of it yes, but there's a lot of others. Including swearing, lying, spreading hatred or fitnah, bearing false witness and so on.

Re: Guard your tongue, lest you get thrown in hellfire.

I know i'm prolly gonna get someone to argue with my point, but whatever. I didnt' mean to say that something IS a bigger sin than something else, but rather in my own eyes and personally speaking I view as sins of the tongue worse than some other sins..

Re: Guard your tongue, lest you get thrown in hellfire.

Where one part of our teachings is to avoid talking ill of others, the other part is to try and forgive such actions when directed towards you. It’s really how you look at it. Don’t think that those around you find fault in you just for the sake of it (even though some people do). Try to think that they want what’s best for you and are trying to help you. This way, you will convert a negative into a positive and gain ‘ajr’ for it at the same time :insha:

It reminds me of a saying of our Prophet :saw:. He told us that when we’re about to judge someone on an action, we should think of 70 arguments as to why they’re doing that particular deed. If we’re still convinced of their fault, then we’re free to judge. Otherwise, we should keep our peace.

I know it’s not easy , but we should try.

Re: Guard your tongue, lest you get thrown in hellfire.

I think its the easiest sin to commit, everything else we think about before doing and realize but we can talk crap about someone for a long time n not realize we have done something so wrong, n especially the whole thing about tohmat(blaming ppl without knowing facts) we believe so much stuff about ppl we hear and judge ppl without knowing the whole truth..May Allah forgive us all :-/

Re: Guard your tongue, lest you get thrown in hellfire.

It is the easiest to commit because it has become an ingrained part of our life and society.

If you actually try thinking about each word before you say it, sooner or later it becomes easy to avoid such things.

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique used to keep a small stone under his tongue. Before he spoke anything he'd wonder if the thing is good or not, and if so he`d take the stone out and speak and then immediately put the stone back in. He truly realized the importance of this.
