GTA Wedding: Chandni vs Woodbine

Hi there,

We are planning a winter wedding on a budget and are trying to decide between Chandni (Gateway) and Woodbine Convention Centre (South Hall). We have also visted Candles and Payal and have pretty much ruled them out (don’t like the idea of a shared lobby). We are waiting to hear back from Le Jardin but are concerned they will be out of our price range.

Our feelings about the halls so far are:

Chandni Pros: Appears to have a very client-centred approach and willingness to accommodate requests, beautiful lobby area (important for pictures in the winter), relatively good reviews online

Chandni Cons: Ugly paintings/decor in the hall itself, a bit pricier than Woodbine, difficult to get the manager to say exactly what he will provide (says that he will include all sorts of things and take care of us, but it is difficult to get details of those things)

Woodbine Pros: A bit cheaper than Chandni, very elegant looking hall, manager is very upfront about what he will do for us (not much), attached hotel is convenient for our many travelling guests

Woodbine Cons: Does not appear to be client-centred, the lobby area looks run-down, Cheaper cost may be offset by less inclusive package (additional costs for centre pieces, bartenders, etc), can not find very many reviews online

We will be planning most of the wedding from outside of Toronto, which is why being able to trust the manager is so important to us. There seems to be a contrast between a person who we trust to take care of us but are not really sure what exactly he will do (Chandni) and a person who is very clear about where his responsibililities end but will cause significantly more work for us to do (Woodbine).

If anybody has any reviews or experiences of Chandni or Woodbine, we would sincerely appreciate hearing them. We are looking for any information you may have, including experience with the staff, quality of the food, opinions on the halls themselves, etc.

Thank you very much for your help!

Re: GTA Wedding: Chandni vs Woodbine

I had my wedding at Woodbine and Valima at Chandni (Chrysler Drive) last month. Both events were excellent! But I have to say Chandni was better.
Woodbine: I'm guessing you've been dealing with Raj? Speak with Ali. He was so incredibly accommodating to all my requests and gave me as much as he could. The hall is nice, beautiful chandeliers, very nice lobby, nice staircase for pics, carpet is ok looking, linens napkins and chair covers are inlcuded. But no, they don't include centerpieces, they only have a few napkin colours, and they charge extra to use things like projector.
I also stayed at the attached hotel the night before and got ready there... was like $150 for 2 nights in a room with 2 dbl beds.
Chandni: It's not great to look at from the outside cause it looks like it's part of a shopping centre, but from the inside it's really nice. My husband said these guys were GREAT and incredibly accommodating. They included everything in the basic package, like mango lassi and falooda, use of the projector, use of their vases (we brought our own flowers). The food was excellent and the presentation was way better than Woodbine. The bridal room was really run down though, but Woodbine's is only slightly better. If you decide to go with them, I would make sure they outline the terms of the deal though. You don't want any surprises there. But if you're on a budget, this place is great cause they include a decent stage setup with furniture, decent centerpieces, all linens, choice of napinkis, and chair covers.
Price wise, Chandni was $3pp more.

Re: GTA Wedding: Chandni vs Woodbine

Do you girls mind sharing exactly how much per head each venue is charging? (and how many guests you have)

This will help me budget for my wedding next year inshallah :)

Re: GTA Wedding: Chandni vs Woodbine

A Squared, thank you very much for your help and advice. We really appreciate it. We will try to contact Ali at Woodbine -- not sure how well that will go over after talking to Raj but its worth a shot. Its great to hear that you had a good experience at Chandni. Would you mind letting us know who you used for decor? We may decide to go with Chandni if we can find a decorator to spruce up the hall within our budget.

RaniPakistani, I have sent you a private message with more details.

Thanks again!

Re: GTA Wedding: Chandni vs Woodbine

RaniPakistani - it really depends on where what you budget is, it can go up as high as you want, like people pay $40-80 per head as well. It can also go as low as $15 (rarely) to $20. It really depends on who you know or who you can bargin with. I am paying about $22 per head and it includes hall and food.

Re: GTA Wedding: Chandni vs Woodbine

Oh wow! ^^ do you mind sharing which hall you are going with, how many guests you have, and which day of the week the wedding is? (cuz I know those factors will affect the price)

shayster, thanks for your PM. I thought perhaps you could get it cheaper per head considering it's December, but perhaps it's higher since it's a Saturday and you've got fewer guests?

I know a girl getting married
in Chandni this summer. She is paying like 22-24 a head but she's getting married on a weekday and has like 500 guests. She has been veryyyy happy with the service she's been recieving from the hall.

Re: GTA Wedding: Chandni vs Woodbine

I'm getting married in Bombay Palace in July (a very busy season for weddings) but the owner of Bombay Palace is a very close family friend. I had no choice but to choose a weekday because all the weekends were booked and I only have one week to choose a day from because after that week is Ramadhan. I have about 300 guests

Re: GTA Wedding: Chandni vs Woodbine

We r also considering Chandni/Woodbine...
I have a qstion... how do you bargain?? Likeee... if someone quotes u $55 (for ex)... how much can they really bring that down?

What have u guys gotten written on ur contracts? I kno some girls who got everything written down.. whereas some dont...
