GS-ranking system

this has been inspired by the STAR of GS thread

why not make a rating system of guppies.
just to give an idea of which guppie is a ‘valuable’ guppie at GS.

and perhaps mention everyone’s ranking alongside their no. of posts

(the numbers used in the following outline are just hypothetical)

now, several things should be considered:

  1. it is very easy to flood in certain forums whereas it is more difficult to even put a sensible reply in others

  2. active users should get a higher ranking than a guppie who posted a lot four years ago.

  3. if someone opens a thread which gets a lot of replies it means that the ‘topic’ was apparently very interesting.

  4. but again in some forums even a smilie-thread can get 100 replies, whereas in others a good topic only gets 10

how to deal with these problems:

you have basically TWO sides:
the active poster (point 1 and 2): the replies u post urself
the passive poster (point 3 and 4): the replies u get to ur threads

point 1: you look at how much someone has posted in various forums…and for each post in each forum u’ll get some ranking-points. For example: if u put 1 post in Religion it is equal to putting 25 posts in Cafe.
in other words: there are weighing factors for each forum.
so if someone posts 50 posts in Cafe and 2 in Religion, his/her ranking points will be + 100 (=50 x 1 + 2 x 25). (just like in cricket u get more points for scoring a century agains australia, than against kenia)

point 2: because we have to consider current users, you can ONLY look at the posts from the last 5 or 6 months. So, guppies who haven’t posted for a long time will over time automatically lose their ranking (just like in sports like cricket/tennis etc)

so, point 1 and 2 together give a ‘ranking’ of the active-posters side.
now the passive-side

point 3: u could look at the average replies to ur threads over the last 5/6 months.

two problems arise here: -1/ merging threads

-2/ threads with more than 500 or so replies: u could just put a treshold at 500....annything above will give the same points

point 4: again, average posts per thread in Cafe are counted less than average posts per thread in Poetry for example.

this is the passive-poster side

the active and passive together give u the ranking of a guppie

advantages of this method:

  • people will be more inclined to reply in other forums too…check out those forums…

  • people will be motivated more to open ‘interesting’ threads! threads which will appeal to other guppies will get more replies

  • using this method we can get an insight into guppies who are doing a good job in other forums, without them having to flood. there are a lot of guppies in other forums who are unknown only because they don’t post much…like in Poetry, Culture etc

  • Ahmadjee’s wish will be fullfilled that ppl should check out other forums too

disadvantages and solutions to them

  • one might say that people will now be inclined to start flooding in other forums :nook:
solution for this: make sure that the weight of a forum is inversely related to how much is posted in that forum: in other words: if a forum will get flooded, the weighing factor of that forum will decrease thus ensuring that posting in that forum gets less attractive! :k:

  • if u see any disadvantage please tell

Have you read some of the posts in religion? It doesn't necessarily follow that somoeone posting there would be worth double points as opposed to Cafe.

Judging whether a thread is of value is going to be difficult through a points system.

well....as you say in religion there has been posted a lot there........a lot of fights etc even chit chat.........but the solution to this is also mentioned: if a forum gets a lot of posts its weighing factor will automatically decrease.....so if these people continue to 'flood' religion they will get little points for their posts...

** people, I want to do a little experiment with my ranking system, starting from coming Monday.

therefore I need some volunteers, who would like their rating to be calculated over a period of one week.

If you want to help the development of this ranking system, please apply here or send me a PM.

I’m hoping to get about 10 volunteers. Thank you

In case I don’t get any volunteers, I will randomly pick 10 Guppies from various forums, and silently follow their posts and make the calculation.

:D**

today is the first day of the test.....i have gathered 8 volunteers.
so, i will be keeping track of 2 other persons....

results are due at the end of this week or early next week :)

Good luck :k:

^thnx :k:

a little interim analysis showed that so far all is going according to plan

NeSCio’s log

latest news, monday evening:

there are STRONG indications that my system is giving incentive to the participants to post in other forums…NOT flood, but actually giving good advices/viewpoints etc :k:

i’ll keep u updated.

NeSCio's log

Tuesday evening

as expected people have tried their best posting in other forums too.....or at least have tried to.

And as expected some people are not that good at posting good quality posts; or they feel it takes TOO much time...........so they have left those forums and gone back to Cafe flooding to increase their rating............not knowing that my rating system accounts for that.

RESULTS!!!!

Ok, here are the results (since Gizzy and CI haven’t sent in their results, I have not included them in my analysis…when they do submit it, I’ll run the analysis again)

I have desiged my rating system in such a way that it ranges from 0 to 500.
So the highest ever rating possible is 500 (in ur post infinite number of posts…)

Here are the results:

The total number of posts posted by the guppies in the four days

POTS

1	Aashi – 418
2	&Passionate – 263
3	Mr Xtreme 102
4	irem – 96
5	khan_sahib – 59
6	Qrius – 50
7	CM – 39
8	Hskhan – 13
9	ShiNoO – 11

however, if u correct for the forums in which they have posted and the no.of replies they got for their threads, then this is thr result

(in other words, this method not only looks at whether someone posts a lot…but also how and where they post…thus this system judhes the quantity AND the quality of posts :k: )

RATING

1.	Mr Xtreme – 450
2.	Aashi – 368
3.	hskhan – 361
4.	khan_sahib – 337
5.	irem – 328
6.	&Passionate – 309
7.	ShiNoO – 266
8.	CM – 247
9.	Qrius – 246

i think, it is quit clear that MrXtreme not only has a reasonable amount of posts, but his posts are qualitatively good! Furthermore, his threads are read very often and ppl post to his thread quite often.
And i think intuitively, most ppl will agree that MrX’s posts are one of the best :k:

CONGRATZZZZZ :hula:

Ps: this rating also shows that &Passy posts the most ‘non-sense’: cuz she was no. 2 in amount of posts, but her rating is only no. 6…she drops FOUR places when u correct for ‘quality’ (she drops most places of all…) j/k

Thread of the week

the thread which gave the most ranking points was a thread by khan_sahib in religion forum
congratz for that!

Dude...you should be careful when saying stuff like that about Xtreme. He may burst.

well,........next time: if ppl start copying his posting style....his rating will drop :D

I'm going to do a second experiment starting this wednesday :~)

Only if I win :o

In reply to khan_sahib's thread in FB forum

*[li] I opened a thread in Religion based on Shia and Sunni faith and I got a lot of points for that and I think that can cause problem and can attract people to start threads like this. *
[/li]
if a lot of people start opening such threads in religion forums, it will mean that a lot is posted in that forum. And becuz of the numerous posts in that forum, the quota of that forum will decrease.

[li] I also noticed that using this system anyone can just write "I agree with you", "bravo" or even a smilie in the high rated forum in order to get higher points
[/li]
yes. this is one of the draw-backs of this system: people can put cafe-like posts in other forums and gain points. The only remedy for this (and i hope it works) is that the Mods do their job properly: by just deleting posts which do not belong in the forum.
so this sytem only works if the mods do a good job :~)

[li] People will open more and more "guppie group" type thread
[/li]
yes, this can happen........but i think it will be better for other posters in Cafe, cuz by concentrating the flood in ONE thread other more interesting threads won't disappear.
of course now, one thread can get 1000 replies and therefore the starter gets a lot of points: by i've accounted for that by making a maximum: namely 500 posts.......if a thread get 501 or 6000 posts, the starter will only get the points belonging to the 500 mark.......every post in excess in that thread will not count in the thread-part of the ratings :)

maybe i put in wrongly....not exactly delete each and every post......but at least make sure that ppl stay within the boundaries of the forum :~)

Acha acha samjhe. Good, lage raho shabaash :p

Nice job waise :)
