**Calling all geniuses/brainiacs/nerds/geeks…GS needs you!!
**So, this thread is here for all you smart people to post around a paragraph or so on a scientific topic that you find particularly interesting. The topic can be on anything (Biological/Engineering/Medical etc) as long as it’s related to Science.
Post around a paragraph (or more if you want) on your topic of interest. You can go in as much detail as you want. Explain your topic to the rest of us and explain why it interests you.
Hopefully, we can all increase our knowledge ![]()
I’ll go first!!! ![]()
My topic: **Environmental oestrogens
**Environmental oestrogens are chemical compounds that are present in our environment (so we are exposed to them on a daily basis) They work by producing oestrogenic effects in humans. They have the same effect as the hormone oestrogen because they mimic the structure of the hormone therefore they bind to the oestrogen receptor and activate it.
A lot of research is going into the long term effects of environmental oestrogens. In males, there is evidence to suggest that they can cause a reduction in fertility as they can effect sperm production. In females, there is evidence to suggest a link between these environmental oestrogens and the likelihood of developing breast cancer.
One of the main sources of environmental oestrogens is in plant foods (especially soy products)
Now, it’s your turn! ![]()
