Growing Coriander and Mint in an apt

Salam all,

I am interested in growing coriander and mint in my apt in potted plants, I know some guppans have already done that ? How does one go about it? Please share your tips.

Jazak Allah khair…

Re: Growing Coriander and Mint in an apt

They sell mint and coriander seeds in hardware stores like home depot and lowes etc. I am growing lots of vegetables in my backyard but mint I am growing in a big pot as mint starts to spreads like wild fire and becomes hard to control. I am not growing hara dhania because it is so cheap already. Podina is very expensive where I live.
Alternative to seeds is to just plant the left over dandian of podina in a pot and you might have some sabut dhania which you can plant in a big flower pot.

Mirch Bhai,

I don't live in the US ... can I use the dhaniya seeds I get from the indian grocery store... and btw how do we use dhaniya bought from market to plant and grow new plants.... pls explain...thank you

Yes you can use the coriander seeds from Indian store, for podina you can use the danthal/branches/dandian whatever you call them which are left over after you pluck the mint/podina petal from them. just put them in a big flower pot and cover with half inch dirt and water them daily make sure the water does not remain standing in the pot it should drain out.
Dhania plant you buy from store you cannot use them to grow and replant, you have to start them from sabit/whole dhania/coriander you buy from Indian store.
Any more questions ?

Nope...now all I gotta do is share this growing plan with hubby and tell him that we need pots and soil....hehehe..... can't wait for his reaction....

If he does not agree with the plan give him my phone number. He should agree though it is money saving plan , it will appeal to him and he would love you more for being such a wise girl and for going through such a pain to save him some bucks.

the plan came about coz I'm sick of buying bunches of cilantro and mint and them getting wasted coz I didn't cook much food during the week. so maybe this way I can grow them and have them whenever I make salan or I wanna make chutney...oh btw does one pot of plant give a lot .....

It depends how big the pot is. In US they sell pots by various gallon sizes so 2 three gallon for cilantro and one three gallon size for mint should give you enough. If you buy round ones. If you are buying rectangular pots then buy 2 two feet for cilantro and one two feet long for mint.

awesome info mirch bhai ...jazak Allah khair

my mum grows methi, dhanya and pudina and also palak. the palak we get here in aus is not very tasty and she got seeds from pak. plus pudina, dhanya is very expensive.

we dont get methi here and my sister is addicted to methi roti so mum grows for her.
