Since red and purple are such bright colours on a bride, the groom should wear a black sherwani: off-white/cream will look too washed out...
He can take a red/purple jamewaar chaddar wrapped around, and a pug as well if you like... just the right amount of colour on a guy..
In India the grooms wear coloured sherwanis (I've seen bright red, blue, green and yellow/gold once :O) but I think subdued colours look better on guys :)
You could make him wear red/muroon sherwani, not purple cos he might look like barney ;)

^ it looked good cuz its abishek :). i can't imagine any guys pulling it off.
stick to a black, cream, beige or off white sherwani. colored ones look fruity on regular guys.

my friend's sister's fiance bought himself a purple shervani for their engagement and the poor girl cannot find a lehenga to match it.. anyways, i haven't seen the shervani but i can already tell its not gonna be good... :S. oh well, when the engagement does happen, i will post some pics.

Why dont you have something like this. The sherwani is ivory/cream, but the collar has 2 different colours (you could make it Red and Purple) and the newest style is for the guy to have a matching Dupatta to your lengha.

Pink/red on men? That's the height of gayness!! No offence.
Why don't you look for a tuxedo/suit that matches the color of the bride's lehnga?
How about an open collar jodpuri?
Headgear looks ridiculous.
The only Desi menswear I approve of is open jodhpuri for grooms.
