Grinding Teeth

Why do adults or children grind their teeth while sleeping?

some have a habit just generally, but more often than not it is due to stress, grinding teeth not only has an affect on the teeth but also the muscles and joints around that area, and can lead to neck as well
People will serious issues of grinding shud go to the dentist to get a night mouth gurad made,

Re: Grinding Teeth

Is it hereditary?

Re: Grinding Teeth

I don't....I don't know of anyone that does.

Re: Grinding Teeth

^ lol, most people who do don't even know anyway. how would you if you do it while you're asleep? usually, if it's excessive, it will be the dentist that notices the effects on the teeth.

no its not herditary at all, and like stoppit said most people are unaware they even grind since they do it whilst they r asleep,
In most cases people grind their teeth at times of stress liek exam time e.t.c sum ppl however do it all the time, this can lead to considerable wear of the teeth, sumtimes the tooth can be so worn down, mostly the teeth at the back, that there isnt much tooth tissue left, and the tooth may nee dto be taken out , or built up using a filling material

Re: Grinding Teeth

dear Niksik, good question.

this is not a good habit for kids or for adults. it shows ether deficinecy in healthy teeth formation or anger/ self-esteem issues.

doctor should be consulted and also indirectly the habit should be discouraged.

Re: Grinding Teeth

It can ce due to stress. It can also be from teeth shifting. I did this for a number of months...I'd wake up in the morning with such a stiff, sore jaw and face, it was so bad that it would take quite a while for me to get my mouth moving. I broke a molar from grinding so hard. My dentist made a mouth guard for me, a soft rubbery thing that goes on over your top teeth. This helped protect my teeth but since I was still trying to grind, I'd still wake up with a sore jaw. Anyway, it turned out that my wisdom teeth were coming in and there wasnt enough room in my mouth for them to break thru. Once all my teeth shifted and the wisdom teeth broke thru, I stopped grinding.

Re: Grinding Teeth

My son does that alot while sleeping,we went to doc who said it's just a bad habit .

i grind my teeth 2. even in day and i catch myself nd then stop. but it gets worse during stressful times iv noticed. its done unconciously.

I have been told (by my mom) that I occassionally grind my teeth while sleeping.

Aaarrgh, the mere thought of it annoys the hell out of me. :(

Anger and self-esteem issues?

Guilty as charged. :(

Re: Grinding Teeth

A good protection is wearing a splint on your teeth at night, helped me

Re: Grinding Teeth

stress related....even for the child.

I have never heard of it as being called a splint....is that the same as a night guard?

You know, I kinda agree.

I used to grind my teeth during my student days and a few days ago, my daughter was grinding her teeth at night, 2 nights in a row. That was the time she had been talking to me about not wanting to die or turn 100...for those of you who read my blog. She was probably stressed out about this new phenomenon.

She hasn't done that again.

Re: Grinding Teeth

Slightly off-topic, but we have a saying that when a healthy child starts grinding their teeth, its a sign they are going to fall sick...ie catching cold/cough or something. I have observed this couple of times in my kids. Soon as they recover or even soon as they display the symptoms, then they stopped grinding.

The Dentists call it a splint AE..at least mine did...2 of em

yes,the reason why some people or kids grind teeth is due to stress..
