oh I see, but it can be misinterpreted very easily. So it's better to avoid such words, if they can cause some confusion.
i know what you saying, i once said madhab infront of my parents, their eyes were wide open lol.. but it's the common term used for school of thought.. maybe not in the subcontinent.

^ There is no excluding here brother ... I think when the term "four schools" is referred to here it is intended to mean the 'Sunni' schools.

So r Barelvi's limited to people from Pakistan / India? Like it does not seem to be followed by other cultures?
They account for 67% of Pakistani Sunni Muslim population... dunno how accurate that figure is but sounds right.. the rest are Deobandis and small number of Ahle-Hadis and as mentioned above, they are not sects, all difference of opinion.. Brothers in Islam!
Cricketplaya, thank you for your input but I am questioning the 67% of Pakistani Sunni's r Barelvi's bcos in all my life I have never come across them until recently, in London, 2 or 3 mosques.
I vaguely know about the 4 schools of thought, and im not 100% sure but I think most Pakistani's follow Hanafi madhab, but didn't even realise that even within these, divisions exist. Or to put it politely, some people within the Hanafi school of thought wish to follow some things more than others.
JazakAllah khair brother cricketplaya for the clarification. Deobandis are actually far closer to Barelvis than they are to Wahabis. Problem is that this is not often realised.
To be a Wahabi or to be accurate a follower of Abdul Wahab one needs to be from the lineage of Hanbalis.
There are traditional Hanbalis, and there are Wahabis. The Salafis although do not associate to any group are closest to the Wahabis due to their greater association with Imam bin Hanbal.
Amongst the Salafis there are groups too.
Both Rai Barelviya and Rai Deobandia are the two Indian Subcontinent Hanafi groups. There are sub-groups from amongst both of these. Tablighi-Jammat are part of Deobandis but not all Deobandis do Tabligh(Kharooj). And groups like Minhaj-ul-Qur'an and Dawat-e-Islami are from Barelvia.
Please acknowledge all of these as brothers in Islam and do not call them sects.
I agree with what you have said, but i have to mention here, the salafis are just salafis, deobandis and brailvis are not a sub group of salafi.
Infact, i know a few salafi scholars have classified brailvis as a deviant sect (sorry, i used sect) due to their practices for some reason.
Personally, i don't think anyone should point fingers at other muslm brothers in Islam, but merely concentrate on bettering themselves and the ummah, and bringing them closer to Allah and earning jannah.

Salafis or wahabis themselves are a deviant sect. They seem to think that everyone else besides themselves should be killed specially shias?
ad far as i know they wear the green turban because of the color of the Gunbad of the Masjid-e-Nabawi. the idiots dont realize that it was not the prophet who built that green Gunbad, but rather it was done much later by Zangi ( i think it was Nooruddin Zangi).
they also go to mazaars etc. and i have been told that they keep an empty space in the front most row while praying because they think that the Prophet is still alive and prays with them when they pray.
^ in arabic, madhab wud mean something similar to "school of thought"....
and Mazhab also means a place where one urinates. no, I Am not lying. that is the truth. if you want it i will give you the complete detail of why it is like that.

you are right in questioning him. I have not seen many people with the Barelvi sect. maybe where he lives there is a greater concentration of them.
