If you got your green card by marrying a US citizen, than 3 yrs
If you got the green card by being sponsored by a parent, sibling or employer than 5 yrs

Do they count the period if you are in a different country for a month or two? Do they minus that time or its counted in those 3 years.

Yes they will count if you will stay more than 6 months.

Do not stay out of the US for more than 5 months, 29 days, because if you're gone more than 6 months they will deduct that time

...and also you can apply 3 months (90 days) before the 3 years....
