Greek Mythology Is Funny

The funniest work of literature, seriously. What’s up with Zeus’ all extramarital affairs? And who did Aphrodite sleep with if Ero came even before Zeus? To avenge the grief he had caused Gaea’s children, Ouranos’ son Kronos slashed his own father’s genitals and tossed them into the waters, from which rose the goddess Aphrodite - Who, according to the Olympian genealogy, was one of Zeus’ daughters???

What’s the purpose of even learning this? Someone please explain to me…and what kind of god is Zeus? He sires Justice and Peace, yet he is unfaithful to his wife and has to disguise himself to satisfy his uncontrollable sexual appetite. What the F?

Re: Greek Mythology Is Funny

greeks considered science n manual labor n working with tools beneath their level, they believed in developing their intellectual faculties thru 'discussions'and philosophy, therefore slaves were reserved for the afore mentioned tasks.since they did not delve much into science every event in life had a separate god which made the explanation, shud u choose to believe it,easier.wars were initiated by Aries, storms at sea were bcoz the sea god was angry,i forgot his name but u get the point. But it was the time of Aristotle and he kept on categorizing things, greek science is devoid of scientific detail but Aristotle did give us logic, the method of thinking.he said something like this "manual labor dulls the mind n affected political intelligence".some of his contemplations raised questions which only mendel addressed in his experiments after so many years.

I think more than purpose,it has to do with individual interest on how philosophy n logic n thought went thru evolution to achieve its present form.Just my opinion.

Re: Greek Mythology Is Funny

^ Sure the myth had us pondering over its context, but the idea of good, evil, justice, honesty still existed. Then, how could the writer of the myth have the gods indulge in such deviant behavior? If anyone were to believe this, anything wrong or sinful wouldn't be so wrong and sinful. What I mean is that raping, killing, violence, and dishonesty would not even be a mere concern of the believer since the almighty Zeus was very fond of it all himself.

I like what you said about logic and philosophy going through evolution. Even then, it makes me think people back then were either too horny or had no spiritual faith -religion.

agreed.the idea has always existed but wen people r born in an era where all the evil and good was attributed to gods ,then their minds would be developed in accordance with those standards.ur making the mistake(no offence intended) in comparing ur concept of good and evil ,of ur time, with their concept,of their time.

look at things in an alternate manner now,the gods were their own creation and were obviously in their image ie having all the bad qualities which the people had.thats the only way to justify wat they did.even in modern times every rapist or murderer has justification for his actions wether we agree /identify/ understand them or not.like for instance wat we categorize as a fetish is very much normal for those who have those fetishes.

personally speaking i believe that spirituality n faith r different. we have our god, they had theirs, we observe prayers, give zakat etc as our duty, they worshipped n sacrificed too.so if we use the most basic definition for religion ie belief in a god, concept of worship, reward n punishment ;i think maybe a greek of that time who sacrifices virgin goats wud be quite spiritual:D

as always ,for the record, its just my opinion.

Re: Greek Mythology Is Funny

once i heard my teacher saying," when there is God there is no logic or if there is a logic than there is no God"…sonds true in this case…
but one more thing we cant conclude the reasoning of who, where, why the god exist or why did he do so…simply cuz of transitional status of our research n knowledge ..

Re: Greek Mythology Is Funny

Excellent points and well argued (debates being a great Greek trait too). If everyone understands what's behind these 3 statements, world will be a much better place
