Greek Dish - Macaroni & Keema

A great recipe for making macaroni and keema. Saw it on Martha (tv show) today. It tastes really good. I have eaten it once before.

Pastitsio (Greek Dish)

SERVES 8

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, crushed

1 pound lean ground beef

Two (14-ounce) cans diced tomatoes, drained

2 teaspoons dried oregano

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 3/4 teaspoons coarse salt, plus more for cooking macaroni

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

1/2 pound elbow macaroni

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more for baking dish

1/3 cup all-purpose flour

4 cups (1 quart) whole milk

2 large eggs

1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

1 cup crumbled feta cheese

  1. Preheat oven to 375°. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Add onion and garlic; cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is translucent, about 7 minutes. Stir in beef, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, and cook until browned, about 7 minutes. Drain all but 1 tablespoon fat. Add tomatoes, oregano, cinnamon, 1 teaspoon salt, and pepper; bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook, covered, for 15 minutes. Uncover, and simmer for 15 minutes more. Remove from heat; set aside.

  2. Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to a boil; add salt. Add macaroni; cook until al dente. Drain macaroni; set aside.

  3. Melt butter in large saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook, whisking constantly, for 1 minute. Increase heat to high, and while continuing to whisk, add milk and remaining 3/4 teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil, and remove from heat.

  4. Beat eggs in a small bowl. Slowly whisk in 1 cup of hot cream sauce, being careful not to scramble eggs, then beat egg mixture back into cream sauce. Whisk in 3/4 cup Parmesan.

  5. Brush a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with butter. Add half of the macaroni. Cover with 1 1/2 cups cheese sauce. Spread beef mixture evenly over. Layer with remaining macaroni; sprinkle with feta cheese. Top with remaining cheese sauce, and sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup Parmesan. Bake in oven until golden and bubbling, 35 minutes. Let stand until firm, about 15 minutes.

Re: Greek Dish - Macaroni & Keema

Since you mentioned " Macaroni and Keema' . I would like to add my fav one for it... I am sick and tired of those recipes posted on the web and stuff so like personal ones more cuz they are more suited to ones taste. I will post my own one here. so feel free to try it cuz TRYING is everything.

3 lbs KEEMA
1 onion
I can Pasta Sauce.(lots of it )
3 Eggs
Spices (salt, pepper, garam masalaaa and whatever you like)
2 tbl spoons Lime Juice
1 tbl spooon Soy Sauce
Thora sa kata dhaniya
MOzorella cheese (best suited for this recipe).
macaroni as much as needed.
-1 garlic chopped
1- ginger.
3-4 drops of hotsauce
-Olive oil 4 spoons or as much needed

hmm i dont think i missed anything so will cut to the chase and will take you through three different components of this food

1- Macaroni:

take a haandi donga whatever u call it in punjabi we love calling it DONGA..lolz.. well fill it with water , sprinkle some salt in it and throw macaroni in it and let it boil

2-Eggs:
should be boiled duh. so pour cold water in handi (small one obviously) , sprinkle with some salt and dont THROW eggs in it . just PLACE eggs in there and let them eggs boil!

3-Preparing Keema

1- In a haandi (sorry cant translate that one...use webster dictionary for that):P. throw olive oil in it then add chopped onion let em "SAUTE" or brown then add all the spices mentioned above ,then add ginger and garlic , then add lime juice , hotsauce ,soysauce and let it cook for 2 minutes then go ahead and throw keema in that handi and let it cook for 15 mins then when it comes to the stage where u have to "BHUNA " the keema:P then throw lots of pasta sauce in it and "BHUNO" the keema for 5-10 mins.while ur bhunning the qeema slightly keep adding pasta sauce and keep mixing it well. once its ready set it a side.

Final Product:

take out macaroni and throw the water.
Take out boiled eggs and slice them

in one Handi , , pour some dried macaroni then pour prepared keema , then mix it slightly. repead this process till all the macaroni and keema is mixed. finally top it with Mozorella cheese mix it slightly once. then top it with eggs and at the top throw the chopped Dhaniya and server. Trust me u will love it . adios...

Re: Greek Dish - Macaroni & Keema

Our egyptian neighbour showed mom how to make it and in our house its a ramadan dish for some reason. But we just use regular homemade alfredo, never tried it with eggs in the sauce.

Re: Greek Dish - Macaroni & Keema

This dish has become a family favorite. I make it all the time and everyone loves it! The only changes I've made to the recipe are the used crushed tomatoes, rather than diced. And I use pasta shells rather than elbow macaroni.

Re: Greek Dish - Macaroni & Keema

Oh that sounds great. I am going to try it out soon.

Re: Greek Dish - Macaroni & Keema
