Are people getting more and more greedy and materialistic?

Re: Greed

YES.

Specially in our culture.

Re: Greed

Yes, the good old days were so amazing. Let's worship them and remember them all the time.

Re: Greed

Ask yourself this question. Why are you in this "rat race"? To provide for your family? Maybe. But on an individual level, everyone just wants the moola.

Yes we are

Re: Greed

I don't know if participating in rat race is considered being greedy or not...I am still trying to figure that out but one way of defining greed is when people choose their profession Solely based on how much money they'll be making.

Re: Greed

Or when they choose their spouse based on solely how much money they'd be making. Right?

Re: Greed

Actually nevermind, these days some people in our society would call them smart, but I still think that's being greedy and something else.

I will never understand how women or parents can do this......
It's like trying to play God when you full well know that He can actually step in and over-rule.

What if you marry a neurologist who ends up in an accident and loses his sight or his hands? What of your grand plan then?

Re: Greed

I think it simple... the more disposable income we generate, the more our wants increase

*If the son of Adam had a mountain of gold, he would only want a second mountain of gold.
Nothing will fill the mouth of the son of Adam except for the dust from his own grave.

Prophet SAW
*

And what if he doesn't?

You mean a neurosurgeon?

Neurologists, poor things, don't make much.

Though every era's had its share of greed and materialism, it definitely does feel like the breadth and degree of it is far greater in our own time than any before it... It's not that we have a greater capacity to be materialistic; we just seem to have a million more incentives and avenues to express it. With the rise of capitalism, virulent advertising, and the prevailing ideology of the 'self-made man', yesterday's peasants- who might once have been more than satisfied with a hearty meal every now and then- are the average joes at auto shows, drooling over the fancy convertibles they have real hopes of someday attaining (after charging up the right amount of credit cards, of course).

The most interesting byproduct of modern greed is our economic recession here in the states. All those millions of people buying opulent homes they could never hope to afford, all those crazy creditors hoping to cash in on the follies of the dreamers... they're like a system of machines programmed to joyously self-destruct, as long as they get to live fancily while they do it.

The tragic irony of it is, people still aren't waking up.
