Re: GREATS OF URDU POETRY:
KHWAJA HAIDER ALI, ATISH (1767-1846)
Atish was born in Faizabad and lived in Lucknow, for most part of his life. He was a remarkable Urdu Ghazal poet and pupil of Mus'hafi. He never cared for patronage and lived as a dervish.
He was one of the greatest Urdu Ghazal poets of that time. His polished Ghazals are free of hypocrisy with sensuous imagery adding a vibrant and vivid effect.
Quite often, Atish displays a tendency for ornamentation and vebrosity in poetry, but he remains a representative lyricist of that era when Ghazals had a mystic flavour and an emotional and sensuous quality.
The mystic in Atish is not without the didactic touch. He seldom loses spontaneity. His Ghazals may lack depth, but not delight.
MY PICK OF ATISH' VERSES:
*SAFFAR HAI SHARRT...MUSAFIR NAWAZ BOHTEIRAY.....
HAZAAR HAA SHAJJR...SAYA ..DARR-E-RAH MEIN HEIN...
MUQAAM TAKK BHI HUM APNE PAUHANCH HEE JAIYENGAY...
KHUDA TOW DOST HAI.....DUSHMAN HAZAAR RAH MEIN HEIN. *

Re: GREATS OF URDU POETRY:
SHAIKH MOHAMMAD IBRAHIM, ZAOQ (1790-1854)
Zaoq spent all his life in his birth city of Delhi, where he received education in a mosque and learned poetry.
One of his friends introduced him to the heir apparent, Bahadurshah Zafar, who invited Zaoq to become his ustad, or teacher.
After his pupil's accession to the throne in 1837, Zaoq acted as a poet laureate, writing Qaseedas on special occasions. He was always tied up with his duties at the emperor's court.
Zaoq wrote in nearly all the traditional forms, but his chief contribution to Urdu poetry is generally acknowledged through his Qaseedas. At the same time, he also enjoys the reputation of a prominent Ghazal writer, having command on both language and idiomatic diction.
MY PICK OF ZAOQ's VERSES;
KICI NE KICI KO BEDAD GARR MAARA...TOWE KIYA MAARA
JO KHUDD HEE MARR RAHA HO...
USSKO GARR MAARA...TOW KIYA MAARA
DIL BUDD KHUAA MEIN THAAH...
MAARNA YA CHASM-E- BUDD BEIRR MEIN..
FALAK PERR ZAOQ TEER..AH..AGARR MAARA...TOW KIYA MAARA

Re: GREATS OF URDU POETRY:
MIRZA ASADULLAH KHAN GHALIB (1797-1869)
Ghalib was born in Agra and started composing poetry when he was only 10-years old. When he was barely 13, he got married to Umrao Begum the sister of a Nawab of Loharu.
She did not bore him any child and they adopted Arif as their son.
Soon after that Ghalib arrived in Delhi and apart from a journey to Calcutta (1827-29), he lived there almost all his life
(his residence area; Gallee Qasim Jaan... still exsists).
Ghalib had a complete command on oriental knowledge and especially on the Persian language. Although he regarded his Persian verse as most worthy to be read, he is best remembered for the comparatively smaller collection of Urdu Ghazals.
The diction of his poetry --- notably the easier phase --- is highly Persianized and his thoughts often gripping and intense.
An appealing humour, irony and clear-sighted detachment pervades the entire collection of Ghalib, and finds expression of his views about God, heaven and hell, the universe, humanity, his beloved and himself.
MY PICK OF GHALIB's (MANY) VERSES;
SUBB KAHAN KUCCH LALA O' GUL MEIN NUMAYEN HOGAYEEN...
KHAAK MEIN KIYA SOORTEIN HOUNGEE K PINHAN HOGAYEEN...
WOH NIGAHEIN KIYON HOEE JAATEE HEIN YA'RAB...DIL K PAAR...
JO MERI KOTAHEEAY QISMAT SE MUSRGAAN HOGAYEEN...
UNN HEE ROUTAA RAHA GHALIB TOW AIE AHL-E-JEHAN...
DEKHNA INN BASSTTEEYON KO TUMM...K VEERAAN HOGAYEEN !
Editor's note:
I have this honor to be a descendant from the khandaan of Ghalib's wife Umrao Begum....who was my great great great grand-dad's sister. I also have the honor to have acted in PTV's play titled "MEIN KAUN HOUN AIE HUM NAFASON" written by Aliya Imam in 1969 on the 100th death anniversary of Ghalib, produced by Kunwar Aftab. **I played the character of Ghalib's best friend 'Kaalay Saheb'.
*
*Back in 1967 I also acted in a documentary film produced by DFP-Govt of
Pakistan, directed by Khaleeq Ibrahim Khaleeq...where I played the character
of my father's great grand-dad Nawab Allaudin Khan ALAI who was the student
of Ghalib and it was on Alai's request that Ghalib wrote the famous Ghazal;
*"MEIN HOUN MUSHTAQ-E-JAFFA, MUJHE PE JAFFA AUR SAHEE...."**
The ghazal sung by Noor Jehan...was picturized with me (as Alai) sitting in
front of Ghalib (played by Subhani Ba'Yunus). The ghazal's last line
clearly mentions " MUJHE SE GHALIB...ALAI NE GHAZAL LIKHWAIEE...."*
At one point in the PTV play....Ghalib while reading ALAI's letter to him...
saying "Aap Mere Dada Hein..." replies by writing "Mian...Mein Tumhara Dada
Nahin...DIL-Dada Houn..." (that's a fact taken from the archives of Ghalib's works
and letters...maintained at Kutub Khana-e-Khass in Delhi. Ref: Dr. Gopichand Narang) -------------*-Raju

THANK YOU Hiba.....though I feel its a Shot-in-the-Dark! but then again I have received quite many pm from members--saying that they ARE enjoying this thread...and I have but few more--after which I will come towards the Urdu Greats of the recent era--till date.

Re: GREATS OF URDU POETRY:
MOMIN KHAN, MOMIN (1800-1852)
Momin was born in Delhi and spent all his life there. He was the son of reknowned hakeem, or physician at the imperial court.
Momin received a standard education, including training in Yunani or Greek medicine. He was a man of wide interests, including music as well as poetry, astrology and geomancy.
He was highly regarded as a writer of amulets, and generally considered one of the best chess players in Delhi.
He was a Ghazal and masnavi writer. Some of his Ghazals and masnavis are frank descriptions of his love affairs and feelings and are some of the best in Urdu.
His Ghazals treat all the traditional themes and show a highly sophisticated technique and a deliberate obscurity of meaning.
MY PICK OF MOMIN's VERSES;
WOH JO HUM MEIN..TUMM MEIN QARRAR THAAH..
TUMHEIN YAAD HO K NA YAAD HO
WOHI YAANI..WADA NIBHA KA...
TUMHEIN YAAD HO K NA YAAD HO...
WOH JO LUTF MUJHE PE THAAY PESH TARR....
WOH KARAM K THAAH MERE HAAL PERR..
MUJHE YAAD HAI SUBB ZRRA ZRRA.....
**TUMHEIN YAAD HO K NAA YAAD HO......!

Re: GREATS OF URDU POETRY:
sorry but i would like to submit some correction..
Na To Main Kisi Ka Habib Hoon, Na To Main Kisi Ka Raqeeb Hoon, Jo Bigar Gaya Vo Naseeb Hoon, Jo Ujar Gaya Vo Dayaar Hoon
Pa'ay Fatiha Koi Aaye Kyun, Koi Chaar Phool Charhaye Kyun? Koi Aakay Shamaa Jalaye Kyun, Main Vo Bekasi Kaa Mazaar Hoon
:)
Here is what Dr. Jamiluddin Aali, Dr. Farman Fatehpuri, Dr. Jamil Jalibi and Shr Ansari.....the pundits of URDU have to say when I posed your matter on them;
FIRSTLY...there is a controversy that the very verses I quoted above....belong to Bahadurshah Zafar !! (that's news to me as well!). Next, the verses YOU quote are also correct but the ones I quoted are also not wrong. The history, they say, is not very clear on Bahadurshah Zafar's poetry AFTER his fall and the ones---he reportedly, wrote from exile in Rangoon. It is also said that some of the popular ones are not of Zafar but have been attributed to be by him on the fact that.....he became a disdain deposed King and earned the plight of many diehards of those days....who's generation carried the popularity of Zafar by attributing many verses of unknown....to be of ZAFAR as he was in large focus due to his disposition.
Khush Rahein.......
Re: GREATS OF URDU POETRY:
Nawab Mirza, Dagh Dehalvi (1831-1905)
Dagh was born in Delhi in an aristocratic family. Due to disturbing events during 1857 (GHADDAR) War of Independence, Dagh moved from Delhi to Rampur State and then in 1886 to Gyderabad Deccan,
where he spent the rest of his life.
He was a student of Zaoq and became a famous poet at an early age. His love poetry ---- based on his personal experiences of palace life --- reflects the decadent feelings of feudal nobility,
emptiness of thought and superficial emotion.
His sensitive, smooth and at times frivolous Ghazals are very musical. His use of simple words and current idioms reveal a unique power of artistic diction.
He was the last classical Ghazal poet of Urdu
and the most popular one of his time.
MY PICK OF DAGH's VERSES;
BHANVEIN TANNI HEIN, KHANJARR HAATH MEIN HAI.....
TUNN K BEITHAY HEIN...
KIS SE AAJ BIGGRI HAI...JO K YUNN BUNN K BEITHAAY HEIN....
ILAHI KIYON NAHIN UTTHTTEE QAYAMAT MAAJ'RAA KIYA HAI....?
HAMARE SAAMNE PEHLOO MEIN DUSHMAN K WOH BEITHAAY HEIN....
Re: GREATS OF URDU POETRY:
Salaam,
you better check the name of the khaliq of this ghazal too. Mostly people confuse that this ghazal was created by Bahadur Shah Zafar but I have read that the khaliq of this famous ghazal is Muztar Khairabadi (father of famous poet JaN Nisar Akhter). I postedit long time ago.
