Re: GREATS OF URDU POETRY:
GHULAM HAMDANI, MUS'HAFI (1750-1824)
Mus'hafi was born in Amroha, but spent his youth in Delhi where he soon established himself as a prominent poet.
Later he settled in Lucknow in search of patronage.
His success in Lucknow, however, came on following the raging trend of the local poets, who were reverting to the classical and traditional style of poetry. Mus'hafi seemed to have no difficulty in following the trend and wrote with as much case in the classical style as he wrote in the local diction.
Mus'hafi was a remarkably prolific poet. Forced by poverty, he used to sell his Ghazals to other poets, but still managed to leave eight divans, or volumes, of love and poetry.
His fame not only rests on lyrical Ghazals, but also on three tazkerahs or anthologies of contemporary Urdu and Persian poets.
