Greatest cricketers of all time

Came across this excellent piece by a knowledgeable blogger

Not surprisingly, many indian guppies did not like it or agree with it but he/she makes some very good valid points in support of her analysis

Cricket: Greatest cricketers of all time

Re: Greatest cricketers of all time

Agree with # 1 being Sobers. I would move Richards to 3. Gavaskar to me is above Tendulkar. Andy Roberts Michael Holding Wes Hall Gilchrist are absent. Too many Pakistanis in top 10. Imran at 3 is a joke.

Re: Greatest cricketers of all time

Gavaskar lol

What a crappy batsman he was

Re: Greatest cricketers of all time

During those days batsmen did not wear a helmet. Gavaskar faced the likes of Roberts Holding Colin Croft Joel Garner Dennis Lillee John Thompson Hadlee Willis botham Sarfraz Nawaz and others both at home and away. He carried his bat several times because his teammates fell to pace and bounce. It was a rare sight to watch Gavaskar getting beaten.

As a 20 yr old he made his debut as an attacking batsman against windies. On the away series he along with Sardesai hatted India to a win. His hook shots were excellent. Then hexhad to curb hisxaggression. And that led to. Several outstanding inningsxbuilding innings.

His straight drives cover drives square cuts were precise.

He had no weaknesses. He played spin bowling with equal ease.

Forgot to ask the standard question - want to step outside?

Re: Greatest cricketers of all time

This article/ranking is a joke

The author (Nayeemuddin Mohammed) has allowed his bias to overshadow his objectivity.

Re: Greatest cricketers of all time

and where would you put him?

Re: Greatest cricketers of all time

I am a bit disappointed with your statement. You won’t be saying that if you knew Imran’s test record. Where you put Imran in the ranking order is ‘subjective’ and up for debate but he was definitely one of the greatest cricketers of his time. Imran’s bowling record compares very well with the very best bowlers of his time incl. Marshall, Hadlee, Roberts, Lillee and Holding. Add to that his batting average of 37.69 (the best among the 4 great all-rounders of his time) and leadership skills and he was one hell of a cricketer

Re: Greatest cricketers of all time

No Hanif Mohamed? and Wasim Akram is there?

OK, maybe I am out of touch for too long then.

Re: Greatest cricketers of all time

Bhai GA I was one of the biggest fans of Pakistani cricketeers from the 70s. Imran’s peak years probably came after 1982 Aug when I stopped following cricket. Hence my comment. I truly was not trying to offend.

#3 seems too high. I would actually put Richards above bradman. Cant imagine anyone other than Sobers be ahead of Richards.

My favorite player in terms of style and personality was Majid Khan - only next to my Pataydi and Vishwanath.

You had to have followed cricket in that era to understand what I am saying. In India many of us used to idolize Pakistani players. When Asif played his last Test in Delhi and was run out at non strikers end off Bedis finger tips there was pin drop silence in our hostel common room. No celebration of a wicket. Guys choked up.

So my comment was just based on which cricketeers I followed during my teen and early 20s.

Re: Greatest cricketers of all time

Sobers Richards Bradman Andy Roberts Michael Holding Imran

Re: Greatest cricketers of all time

Why is Sachin Tendulkar ranked at #17?

Imran Khan at #3?

And where is Ricky Ponting

This is a ridiculous list.

Re: Greatest cricketers of all time

Thanks Southie. misunderstood your comment ... ghalati sey mistake hogayee ... Yes Viv was a very very special player, a phenomenal batsman. No one can bat like him. I remember when Windies visited Pakistan in 1986, I would skive classes (and I was a very good student at school) just to watch Viv bat!

Re: Greatest cricketers of all time

I yearn - no, demand - to have been born in a time like this!

Oh, many the sheer joy of witnessing sports rising about anything else in life, if only for a few moments. In this day of commercial games, half-cooked and talentless hacks, what you said above seems - and I am sure, was - the golden period of cricket. The undisputed golden period of the game.

The days of the last decade gone by, and the countless ones to come, never were, and never will be like this!
