Re: Great Book / Terrible Movie
Good time-pass that book was. Though after reading this book, I never dare to read any of other work by the author. ![]()
Re: Great Book / Terrible Movie
I had to read another for my beloved GSBC - I can't even remeber the name; it was the one about the overpopulation virus.
Re: Great Book / Terrible Movie
Julian Jarrold’s 2008 adaptation of Brideshead Revisted.
I found this adaptation deplorable to the least. The plot was drastically changed and excluded various important elements while oversimplifying others. These were replaced with irrelevant twists and turns that were never written by the author, which, in some instances, directly contradict what was written in the novel. Many of the characters, who were quite complex and three dimensional in the novel, were oversimplified to such an extent that they become one-note caricatures.
Another issue I had with this adaptation was that it distorted the underlying themes of the novel and oversimplified them to such a degree that the overall meaning is lost. One of the fundamental themes of the novel was faith and religious upbringing and how our perception of these changes, often dramatically, throughout our lives. On a similar note, the author examines the struggle of adapting with the times, while remaining faithful to one’s religion during an age which saw vast social and political change, which was often in direct conflict with religious principles. The film, however, spun these complex issues into a one-dimension anti-religion, Catholic-bashing tirade. While the novel did examine the various issues facing a rather devout, albeit slightly duplicitous, upper class Catholic family from the early 1920s to the beginning of the 1940s and explored the rebellion that religion often incites against itself, it was most certainly not anti-religion. In contrast, the film presented the story in such a way that it seemed that every misfortune the characters faced was caused by religion and that if it weren’t for religion, the characters would all lead perfectly happy lives.
I was pretty sad Peeves the poltergeist wasnt in the harry potter movies :(
Twilight was nothing short of an abomination.
Phil Pullmans Northern Lights was a book I cherished growing up. The idea of having little animals that mirror your feelings was too awesome for me. Reminded me of pokemon gahah. Sadly the movie wasnt good enough to allow the series to continue on film.
Re: Great Book / Terrible Movie
I don't think these are great books, but the movies were terrible:
DaVinci Code
Percy Jackson

Dune- Awesome book, Awful movie
I quite agree. It was a horrible adaptation, especially the way it ends with it raining on Arrakis. If I'm not mistaken, aren't the sandworms, which are only found on Arrakis and are the only source of melange, harmed by or at least vulnerable to water in the book?
Re: Great Book / Terrible Movie

The author is Frank Herbert. It's a series of six novels: Dune, Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune.
Re: Great Book / Terrible Movie
