GRAVITY WAVES DETECTED - afterglow of the BIG BANG

Gravity waves in the “primordisl microwave radiation” that lingers in space 14 billion years old have been detected for 1st time using radio telescope in south pole.

Re: GRAVITY WAVES DETECTED - afterglow of the BIG BANG

This is first DATA ON CREATION OF THE UNIVERSE. This shows" gravitational waves which "squeeze and stretch the fabric of space" , were created in abundance during early expansion of universe. "
"14 BILLION years after big bang we get a peek st the FIRST moments of creation. "

This puts to rest universe is a "self sustaing cycle " theory

Bicrp2 expt. Measured orientation of microwave radiation. Did this in south pole where Atm dry. Else MW get absorbed in water vaporous.

Ruled out contamination. 19 put of 20 chance sure. Euro sp agency also similar results. But half as intense.

Re: GRAVITY WAVES DETECTED - afterglow of the BIG BANG

This is one of a kind news. Exciting.

Now will some geek shed light on what gravity waves are? Is there a Vidura in the house?

Re: GRAVITY WAVES DETECTED - afterglow of the BIG BANG

Compared to the Fortification thread in Life, this is not big bang. But big whimper.

Maybe those gravitational waves should have been Fortification waves? Mods, could you manipulate the data and change the Fortify the Title appropriately?

Let’s assume that you are in a small raft in a big lake. I have a power boat and I pass by you at a high speed. If I am at a distance from you, you will see my boat passing by, but it will not affect you till sometime later. That is when the waves generated in the water by the motion of my boat reaches you. Your small raft will start shaking, all thanks to the ripples created by my boat in the water.

Take the same analogy, where spacetime is calm body of water. Any mass that is moving through the spacetime is creating ripples, which is known as gravitational waves. Those waves will reach you based on how far you are from the mass at any given time. The waves that were created some 14 billion years ago are reaching you now, because that is how far you are from the source in spacetime.*

Re: GRAVITY WAVES DETECTED - afterglow of the BIG BANG

Thanks. Some questions.

1) does this mean our distance from big bang source can be calculated by measuring speed of g waves? Or was the origin time 14b yrs ago fixed. So we can NOW calculate distance from big bang source?

2) What u said is for ANY object moving thru spacetime. I assume the raditekescope has a way of knowing these g waves are from big bang?

Re: GRAVITY WAVES DETECTED - afterglow of the BIG BANG

Look at this pic. It might help.

  1. Speed of G waves equals to speed of light. As the wave travels, it maintains it amplitude, but its wavelength keeps increasing. I am guessing that scientist know the value of the wavelength of the G waves when it starts, so when they measure the present wavelength of a G wave, they could calculate back when it started. In this case, 14 billion years ago.

  2. Also, because we know that Universe was created roughly 14B years ago, this G wave must be from the big bang time (my guess).

Re: GRAVITY WAVES DETECTED - afterglow of the BIG BANG

Thanks.

Could not open link in kindle.

1) so we have apriori knowledge universe started 14B yrs ago? I assume theft is what the link States?

so great

Here’s the link to BICEP2 press conference. It’s pretty exciting.

Re: GRAVITY WAVES DETECTED - afterglow of the BIG BANG

Good explanation for a normal everyday Joe like me. I have been reading up more stuff and watching more documentaries about our Universe and deep space probes.

Fascinating stuff and keeps me busy for hours sometimes.

Re: GRAVITY WAVES DETECTED - afterglow of the BIG BANG

^ You skipped physics in high school, didn’t you? :hoonh:

You know that he he was interested in biology from the day one.

Re: GRAVITY WAVES DETECTED - afterglow of the BIG BANG

^ Gee I don’t know. I was a baby then.. :snooty:

ok ok, I am pertty old too. :bummer:

Re: GRAVITY WAVES DETECTED - afterglow of the BIG BANG

Oh man, Physcis and me had a very rocky relationship!

We used to khee khee at the pictures in Bio books

Jokes aside a question, when people say we are looking back at time when we see distant stars, how? Say light comes out of my face and as soon as it leaves my face I move away. When it reaches you what will you see? Will you see nothing or will you see me standing there when I am actually not there?

Re: GRAVITY WAVES DETECTED - afterglow of the BIG BANG

are you all Michio Kaku fans here ??
:smack:

It takes light from Sun, eight minutes to each us, which means you’re looking eight minutes into the past when you look at the sun. In other words, if Sun blows up right now, you won’t know it till eight minutes are gone.

Hell no. He slightly impressed me with his earlier books, but he tried to be over futuristic and visionary. That is where he lost his uniqueness.

boss its 10pm there is no sun!!
