This is exciting! What if we actually do live in a multiverse and every time the universes touch, it causes a big bang and what if now gravitational waves could detect those big bangs? HOLY CRAP!

Experiment was very 18th century-ish.
They think earth expand and shrink because of gravitation waves from distance stars..
And their laser beam focused at each other give different reading.

The detector is able to pick up discrepancies between the two beams that are a ten-thousandth the width of a proton.

Don't think so. It has to be a huge event to cause ripples/vibrations in the fabric of spacetime. A planet simply moving won't do that because it's not in close contact with anything else and it's not heavy enough. Remember they measured two tiny waves of same amplitude so it must have been two objects far far away orbiting each other near the speed of light before colliding to have caused those waves.

The objects didn't have to be traveling at near speed of light. They just need to be heavy enough, and need to be accelerating or decelerating. In this case, collision between two black holes caused the deceleration.

Yeah, but I thought they did so and I also thought they would be accelerating as they got closer and closer and black holes already spin at near speed of light so wouldn't their interaction be near speed of light?

I am sure they did. I just said they didn't have to. But now I am thinking that ripples must be because of the change of momentum, and momentum is the product of mass and velocity, so you are probably right. Bigger the mass and higher the speed, more prominent the ripples must be

18th century did not necessarily mean inaccurate.
Method they used reminded me of Doppler shift experiment.
That was pretty old as well.
Also Einstein did his work long time ago too.
BTW this thing is going make differential geometry a hot cake.

Does anyone that the only woman involved in this scientific team is a Pakistani American Parsi woman from karachi. She was born in Karachi and did her schooling there but did further studies in the US. She is a Professor of astrophysics in MIT and won a grant for $500 000 to do research in this area.
