Graphics Processor Overheating.

Yesterday, I was playing NFSUG2-BE and suddenly I got this message that Graphics Processor is over heating and then the game crashed. I checked all the fans, including the one on the graphics card, and all of them are operating fine. Then I opened up ATI Catalyst Control Panel and the card temp was showing at 87 degC. I have not enabled overdrive settings. Then slowly the temperature started dropping till it stabilized at 62 degC.

Now this is the first time this has happened on this machine. Is my card approaching its natural death?? This is an old card Gigabyte 9600XT-128MB but I have used this card to play this game before as well many times without any problem. Any suggestions?

Re: Graphics Processor Overheating.

There can be couple of reasons...
1) first is as u mentioned that the card is reaching its natural death.
2) your power supply is getting, it happen sometime when ur powersupply is not providing the actual voltage and wattage to the card then they try to extract more voltage from the power supply which in turns ups the temperature of the card (it has happened to me too and simply changing the power supply solved the problem)
3) your fan speed has gone down and it is not dissipating the heat as quickly as the heat is produced.

I will suggest you change the power supply first and also opening the side case of the casing can help in some cases.

Re: Graphics Processor Overheating.

Can you please state what is model of the of your ATI?

also are you having some good casing.. I mean good air passage in you cpu...
and if your graphics card having a fan on it then check it if it is working fine..... I mean the speed of fan and so.

Re: Graphics Processor Overheating.

2) My power supply is almost new. Only 6 months old. AC Bell 550W. I don't have any problem with any other component. Changing the power supply is out of budget. :)
3) I shall check the fan mounting today if it has come loose.

Thanks!

ATI 9600XT GPU. Board by Gigabyte. I keep the casing sides open as I experiment around. ->HINT<-:(

Re: Graphics Processor Overheating.

check here.. thoguh I dont know the built of the card…

Re: Graphics Processor Overheating.

aaho, the chip has thermal grease which is directly mounted to a heatsink, with a fan on top? Can you post a picture of your card buddy? I have some experience with thermal design for PCBs, we might be able to come up with quick fix without spending any money depending on the existing setup

Re: Graphics Processor Overheating.

Spock! Actually that could be one of the reasons. I shall post some pictures soon.
I should have some left-over thermal grease from my processor pack.

Thanks.
