Graduation condition for election has been removed

Good news! Once more the least educated people in our country can lead it! Zardari with his dodgy degree must be relieved.

Daily Times - Leading News Resource of Pakistan

The National Assembly on Wednesday passed the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2009, abolishing the graduation condition required for participating in national and provincial assemblies’ elections.

The bill was passed in pursuance of the Supreme Court (SC) judgement, dated April 21, 2008, which declared as void Article 8A of the conduct of General Election Order, 2002 (Chief Executive Order No 7 of 2002) and clause (cc) of sub-section (1) of section 99 of the Representation of the People Act, 1976, on account of their being inconsistent with Articles 17 and 25 of the constitution, APP reported.

I actually agree with this

re: Graduation condition for election has been removed

Who put the condition in place anyway?

re: Graduation condition for election has been removed

At least now we can have people in the parliament who we really deserve.

The state of Pakistan is indebted to you because of your generous act of approval for this step.

Re: Graduation condition for election has been removed

chadddooo geeeeeeeeeee

the 'state' can go - itself. The electorate should be happy.

that was one of the few sensible things Musharraf did before he went nuts.

and they are....

The electorate also appreciates your generosity.

Re: Graduation condition for election has been removed

If the condition of "graduation" couldn't stop likes of Zardari then I guess it doesn't really matter what conditions we put.

Re: Graduation condition for election has been removed

The reason why I dont think the condition should be placed is simply because the whole point of democracy is that the people choose who is going to be in power. Not the poeple who are already in power. Its totally retarded to have such a restriction.

Why not make it that the PM must have a degree in X with sub major in Y...and a sub sub major in Z?

That's what i said earlier, at least we will get people we deserve.

Long live Zaradri, i hope our future leader will be able to at least spell the word "democracy" properly. Wara phir koi general aa k jootay maar k bhaga dega.

poori qoum ko iss shaandar kamiyabi par dilli mubarkbaad ho

Now we can have matriculates even middle-fail running for the highest office in the land. lol

Re: Graduation condition for election has been removed

^ Why not? Specially when they are running successful businesses in Pakistan and so called 'educated' ones running from the country. What did the 'graduate assembly' achieve that they cannot?

Re: Graduation condition for election has been removed

Education does not mean wisdom. I have seen many uneducated people having more wisdom than educated. Gen Mush just wanted people of wisdom out of parlaiment.

You both have a point but still it does not mean that we should have illiterate people governing us. We gotta have certain standards for people aspiring to become members of parliament

There is a reason why even in educated societies such as the US & UK people expect their politicians to be atleast graduates of a good university.

All US presidents are graduates of top universities - Harvard, Stanford, Yale, Duke, Princeton, you name it. Most UK prime ministers are Oxbridge/London graduates. John Major was an exception.

Not all US presidents went to Uni. I think around 10 didnt.

anyways, harvard law or an illiterate PM, that's the decision the electorate makes...not the bureaucrats and legislators.

Totally agree with you. Could not had said better.

And who is going to decide what illitericacy is?

Thanks for clarifying that...which means that we deserve our leaders (cf. mysterious guy)

Gratefully since the vast majority of our voters are illiterate (60-70% of electorate) there is no realistic hope of things ever changing in our beloved country....the wretched thinking of some of the so-called educated elite amongst us is adding further to the problem

More gratefully since voters in Pakistan don't know exactly what they are voting for, just who they are voting for - personalities not policies count - we will keep electing the same dishonest, uncivilised and illiterate people to the assemblies

And please look at the last 6 or 7 US Presidents (the ones in our lifetime). Each and everyone of them is a graduate of a top university. Even Reagan was a graduate of Eureka college.

I think it was Botham's mother who got it absolutely right when she said something like...'Pakistan is a country of haves and havenots'. The ones who have it ofcourse never complain about anything but the ones who don't have it are the ones who have truly had it.
