They are all good. My car has a built-in GPS but my brother bought a TomTom portable GPS, that's not bad. My dad's friend has a Garmin and that's good too. I think Garmin is a little better as I've heard a lot of good stuff about it. It should cost you around $400, depending on what model you go with.
CNN (or some tv channel) once tried 3 different companies at the same time to get from point A to point B and they were all good. The conclusion was that it really depends on you what features you want in the GPS but they all do the same thing and I wouldn't be surprised if they are linked with the same satellite.
