hey every one… Father’s day is coming up(June 15).. and its been quite a while that my abbe janny was looking for a GPS for North America… so, I decided since fathers day is almost here, and I will get my abby jannyy a GPS…
The question is, which one should I buy? I mean which brands are good, from your personal experience? Do give a cost range with it, I only got about $500 from savings.. I will probably get my older sister to chip in as well, if I need to …
so good quality.. low price.. tell me about GPS.. thank youuuuu alll
They are all good. My car has a built-in GPS but my brother bought a TomTom portable GPS, that's not bad. My dad's friend has a Garmin and that's good too. I think Garmin is a little better as I've heard a lot of good stuff about it. It should cost you around $400, depending on what model you go with.
CNN (or some tv channel) once tried 3 different companies at the same time to get from point A to point B and they were all good. The conclusion was that it really depends on you what features you want in the GPS but they all do the same thing and I wouldn't be surprised if they are linked with the same satellite.

hey, thanks for the info.. Features in GPS? that abby janne knows only; I didnt even think about that..ah man. I guess I will just go to the store and ask the sales rep. ahh lets see, what happens.
I personally have a Garmin Nuvi 680, which I bought for $750 around May of last year. Its nice but for an average user its overkill. However, I have seen good GPS systems from Tom Tom for less than a 100 bucks, and recently saw a refurb (with the same warranty as a new one), for $80 bucks at Ratshack after a $20 mail in rebate! Cant beat that deal! Ofcourse, for about 20-30 more bucks you can upgrade to the one that offers Text to Speech. Its no Garmin, but with that price, you can buy one for your mom too, without hurting your savings!
I bought a TOMTOM one for 139 dollars from Staples .. it has North America maps loaded .. works great for some one who wants to use GPS for just GPS .. not for loading photos or listening to MP3 or doing other stuff ..
the only GPS thing that could add value which is missing from my unit is that it does not tell you the street name ..
so instead of saying, 'TURN RIGHT on JAMES STREET' it would just say 'RIGHT TURN AHEAD' or 'AFTER 400 Yards, TURN RIGHT'
But I think that a software update (if realesed by the company) could take care of that .. its not an hardware thingie.

No, they are diff models, the text to speech as its called, is around 30-40 more... You got the one that I listed before I think, it was on sale at ratshack a little while ago.
As for other stuff that usually ppl dont use, theres alot of cool stuff that GPSes can do, I find the traffic and accident status/alerts very useful in busier cities, cheapest gas prices (this feature is just awesome), and then weather forecasts and alerts (not that useful unless u live in a snowy area)!

Yep, think of the features that your dad is going to use. If he doesn't want to make phone calls using the GPS, upload music into it, find the cheapest gas prices in the area, get traffic updates, and get weather updates etc., then don't pay for that.
My built-in GPS shows a map, obviously, street names written, it calls out the street names when giving directions, displays the distance and time it will take to cover that distance, get directions by putting in the street address, get direction by putting in city, get direction by putting in an intersection, search for business by name, by categories and you can also find stuff like nearest tourist attractions, restaurants (you can select types), gas stations, post offices, grocery stores and a few more things.
Quite frankly, I have used ALL of the features at one point or another. So it depends on what your dad wants out of that GPS, or what he NEEDS out of that GPS.
