Govt begins preparations for expected Waziristan IDPs
TANK: The district administration has started preparations to establish two camps for imminent displacement from volatile South Waziristan tribal region amid reports that massive evacuation has started from different areas.
Official sources told Dawn here Wednesday, that local administration had been directed to make arrangements for sheltering up to 200,000 IDPs expected from South Waziristan. They said that two camps were being established in Tank and Dera Ismail Khan Districts.
One camp is being set up at Dabera in Tank and another in Dera Ismail Khan. Work on Dabera camp has been started and according to the sources 5,000 tents had been dispatched to Tank.
Local people said that recent statement of President Asif Ali Zardari and the threat from Taliban had sparked fear among the local people which triggered evacuation from the South Waziristan. President Zardari told The Sunday Times in an interview that scope of operation will be extended to Waziristan.
On the other hand Taliban have distributed pamphlets in tribal region Monday last asking government to accept their 10 demands by May 25 or face consequences.
The demands include withdrawal of troops from certain areas including the regional headquarters Wana, Zari Noor, Tanai and Shakai, reduce movement of the military convoy, stop checking at check posts, cease drone attacks and open roads for traffic. Zari Noor had been serving as Brigade headquarters in the region.
Head of the local peace committee Abdur Rahim Mehsud said that people from Mehsud areas had started vacating their homes and shifted towards adjacent Tank and Dera Ismail Khan. Families from Makeen and Ladha areas were moving out towards Razmak area of the North Waziristan tribal region.
An official said that about 800 families who fled their houses and moved out towards settled areas had been registered at various check posts. Tension is running high in the South and North Waziristan, which are considered hubs of the Taliban and Al Qaeda.
Reports said that militants have started preparations against possible military action in North and South Waziristan. Taliban have shifted their fighters from Orakzai tribal region and moved to Waziristan.
